The Master Data Import Worksheet in Business Central gives you a flexible way to import data and handle errors during the process. One of the most common questions is which tables you can actually import to. The short answer: quite a lot, and the supported tables cover most of the core master data you work with day to day.

You can import to items, customers, vendors, bills of material (both headers and lines), manufacturing routing (headers and lines), sales prices, purchase prices, stockkeeping units, item variants, ship-to addresses, order addresses, lot numbers, serial numbers, and item reference setup. The setup level is the lowest level of master data you can import directly to.

What the Master Data Import Worksheet does

The Master Data Import Worksheet is a tool in Business Central for importing data with built-in error handling. Instead of pushing data straight into the system and hoping it works, you get a flexible way to validate and correct your data along the way.

The worksheet builds on templates. When you open the worksheet, you go into the template list and select the template you need. Business Central ships with a set of templates out of the box, and each template has a type that tells you which table it imports to.

Which tables you can import to with the Master Data Import Worksheet

From the type list in the template, you can see the full range of supported tables. The Master Data Import Worksheet lets you import to:

  • Items
  • Customers
  • Vendors
  • Bill of material headers and lines
  • Manufacturing routing headers and lines
  • Sales prices
  • Purchase prices
  • Stockkeeping units
  • Item variants
  • Ship-to addresses
  • Order addresses
  • Lot numbers
  • Serial numbers
  • Item reference setup

The item reference setup is the lowest level of master data you can import directly to. Together, these tables make the worksheet a practical option for getting your core master data into Business Central without manual entry.

How to find the templates

To see what’s available in your own environment, open the Master Data Import Worksheet and go into the template list. There you can browse the templates that come out of the box and check the type for each one. The type confirms exactly which table the template imports to, so you can pick the right starting point before you load your data.
