Steps of getting started

Overview of the tasks ahead of you

Now, let’s configure your Business Central solution. It’s the chart of accounts, tax setup, payment terms, posting setup and many more tables.

This step requires a lot of work. You may take a shortcut by purchasing a configuration template or hiring an external consultant to help you out. It’s up to you.

Right now, your Business Central is blank. When you watch the videos, you see a lot of data, and when you look inside your own solution, the same tables are blank. If you feel overwhelmed by this, we suggest getting a configuration template. Otherwise, let’s get to work.

First, we will look at the tables in Business Central that require configuration:

Company information

First, you should go into the ‘Company Information’ setup. Here, you can input details of your company to be used in things like documents printed out for your customers and vendors.

Use your Use Dynamics account to get all the details on this page about required configuration. Log in or create a new user account. It’s free of charge.

We only ask for your name and e-mail address. You accept to receive emails about Business Central from us. You can unsubscribe at any time. And we will not share your data with external parties.

General ledger setup

In the general ledger setup, you define from when, and until when, posting is to be allowed. You must go through all the fields in the general ledger setup.

The chart of accounts

You probably already have a chart of accounts, and now is the time to put it into Business Central.

Posting setup

The posting and tax setup are really the most complex parts of the configuration. We have a lot of videos about this, and we recommend you watch these two collections about it:

Accounting periods

You must set up accounting periods for the first year. You can see more about this topic in this video:

The Country/Region table

The Country/Region table must contain an overview of country codes. In you are in the EU, you must ensure that your own country does not appear in the Intrastat Declaration or in the List Declaration when you generate them.

Accounting currency in the Currency table

Your accounting currency must not be found in the exchange rate table as it may create issues in the solution. And you should also not have currency codes on the customers and vendors who have the same currency as the accounting currency. Open the Currencies table and make sure the currency code you selected as accounting currency is not in it.

Basic reporting setup

With Business Central’s dimension management, you can carry out data collection for reporting.

If you want to work with dimensions in Business Central, it is a good idea to get them correctly configured from the outset.

Have you configured all the green tables?

These were the most important configurations. Do you remember the tables marked with green color in the first video? Make sure you have covered all of those. And review if you should configure other tables from the video.
