Business Central automatically calculates the weight on sales lines as soon as you enter an item. The calculation uses the weight defined on the item’s unit of measure, so the figures are ready the moment you add a line to a sales order.
You can change the weight fields manually if you have measured something different from what the system holds. Be aware that any manual change is overwritten when you change the quantity on the line. The system then recalculates based on the item unit of measure.
The weight fields appear automatically on the sales line. You find them by scrolling to the right on the line.
How weight is calculated on sales lines
When you add a new item line to a sales order, Business Central calculates the weight automatically. There is no separate step to trigger this. The moment the line exists, the weight is there.
If you add a package of spokes to the order, for example, the system pulls the weight from the unit of measure card and applies it to the calculation on the sales line. The same logic applies to any item you enter.
Where to find and how to adjust the weight fields
The fields for weight are added to the sales line by default. Scroll up and to the right on the line to see them. From there you can edit the values directly.
This is useful when you have physically measured an item and found that its actual weight differs from what is stated in the system. You can enter the correct figure on the line.
What overwrites a manual weight entry
A manual change to the weight does not stick under all circumstances. If you change the quantity on the line after entering a custom weight, the system overwrites your value and recalculates. The recalculation again uses the weight from the item unit of measure.
Keep this in mind if you adjust weights by hand. Make any quantity changes first, then enter your measured weight, so your figure is not lost.
