Presenter: Christina Fausbøll, Product Manager

If you work with sales orders in Business Central and need to track weight and packages, you can now see this information directly on the order. The sales order document has been extended with new fields on both the lines and the document header, so you can keep an eye on weight and package counts as you process the order.

The weight fields are calculated automatically. The total weight is based on the order quantity, and the ship weight is based on the quantity to ship. When you change the quantity to ship on a line, the weight fields update accordingly, so you can see the difference between the total weight of the order and the weight of what you are actually shipping.

The package fields work differently. You have to enter the number of ship packages and total packages manually.

New weight and package fields on the sales order

The sales order document has been enriched with additional fields, the same way the shipping manager has. These fields appear on both the order lines and the document itself, and they let you follow weight and package counts throughout the order.

In the example, two items have been added to the order, each with a quantity of five. If you scroll out to the right on the lines, you see a list of new weight fields. These are split into two values: ship and total.

How the weight fields are calculated

The two weight fields are based on different quantities:

  • Total is based on the order quantity.
  • Ship is based on the quantity to ship.

When all five items on each line are set to be shipped, the ship and total values are the same. If you change the quantity to ship, for instance to 2, and look at the fields again, you can see that they have updated and no longer match. This gives you the difference between the weight of the items you are going to ship and the total weight on the order.

Ship package and total package are manual fields

Unlike the weight fields, the ship package and total package fields are not calculated. You have to enter them manually to state how many packages there are in total and how many you have to ship.

Q&A

Which new fields have been added to the sales order?

New weight fields and package fields have been added to both the order lines and the document. The weight fields are split into ship and total, and there are also ship package and total package fields.

How are the weight fields calculated?

The total weight is based on the order quantity, and the ship weight is based on the quantity to ship. They update automatically when you change the quantity to ship.

Are the package fields calculated automatically?

No. The ship package and total package fields are manual. You have to enter how many packages there are in total and how many you need to ship.

What happens to the weight fields when I change the quantity to ship?

The ship weight updates to reflect the new quantity to ship, while the total weight stays based on the full order quantity. This lets you see the difference between what you are shipping and the total order.
