This is what happens in the video

Creating a production Bill of Material in Business Central lets you define exactly which components go into a manufactured item. This guide walks through how to build a production BOM by copying an existing one, swapping out a single component, certifying it, and linking it to the item you want to produce.

The production BOM functionality is only available in the Premium version of Business Central. If you run the Essentials version, you will not have access to it.

You create a new production BOM by giving it a number, a description, and a unit of measure code. Instead of entering every line manually, you can copy an existing BOM and adjust only the components that differ.

You must certify the BOM before it takes effect. A BOM that is not certified will not be used when you create a production order.

To put the BOM into use, you add its number to the Replenishment tab on the item card for the item you are going to produce.

What a production Bill of Material is in Business Central

A production Bill of Material defines the components that make up a manufactured item. When you create a production order, Business Central uses the BOM to determine which materials are consumed.

Keep in mind that production BOM is only accessible if you have the Premium version of Business Central. Without Premium, the functionality is not available.

How to create a production Bill of Material from an item

Start by searching for Bill of Material from the menu to open the production Bill of Material list. From here you can create a new BOM.

In this example, the goal is to create a BOM that is a copy of the Back Wheel, but with an ALU rim instead of the standard rim.

When you create the new BOM, fill in three things:

  • A number for the BOM
  • A description, for instance “Back Wheel”
  • A unit of measure code that you want to produce it in during manufacturing

Copying an existing BOM to save time

After you have set up the header, you can either enter the lines manually or copy an existing BOM from the action tab. Copying makes it much faster when you need a BOM that is almost identical to one you already have.

In this case, copy the existing Back Wheel BOM. Then change the item number for the rim line, replacing the standard rim with the item number for the ALU rim you created.

Certifying the BOM so it works in production orders

The last step on the BOM itself is to certify it. Certifying the BOM is what makes it count when you create a production order. An uncertified BOM will not be taken into account, so do not skip this step.

Linking the BOM to the item you produce

Once the BOM is certified, you need to connect it to the item you are going to produce. In this example, that is item 1210, the ALU Back Wheel.

Open the item card, go to the Replenishment tab, and fill in the production BOM number. Once that is done, the item is ready to be produced.

Q&A

Do I need a specific Business Central version to create a production BOM?

Yes. Production Bill of Material is only available in the Premium version of Business Central. The Essentials version does not include this functionality.

Do I have to enter every BOM line manually?

No. You can copy an existing BOM from the action tab and then adjust only the lines that differ, such as swapping one component for another. This is much faster than building a new BOM from scratch.

Why is my production BOM not being used when I create a production order?

The most likely reason is that the BOM has not been certified. A BOM only counts when you create a production order if it is certified.

How do I connect a production BOM to an item?

Open the item card for the item you want to produce, go to the Replenishment tab, and enter the production BOM number in the relevant field.

What information do I need to provide when creating a new production BOM?

You need a BOM number, a description, and a unit of measure code that the item will be produced in during manufacturing.
