How to create routings in Business Central?
In this video, I will show you how to create a Production Order Routing.
This is what happens in the video
Production Order Routings in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central require the Premium version. A routing defines the sequence of operations needed to manufacture an item. You can create a new routing quickly by copying an existing one, adjusting the operations you need, and certifying it before use.
To make a routing usable on a production order, you must certify it first. After certification, you attach the routing to the item where you want to use it through the item’s BOM and routing settings.
You choose between serial and parallel routing types. Serial means one operation runs at a time. Parallel means operations can run simultaneously.
Premium version required for Production Order Routing
Creating a Production Order Routing in Business Central is only possible if you have the Premium version. If you are on the Essentials version, this functionality is not available to you.
Creating a new routing by copying an existing one
The fastest way to build a new routing is to copy one you already have. Search for Routing from the menu to get started. In this example, the goal is to create an aluminium back wheel routing, which is slightly more complex, by copying the existing Back Wheel Routing.
When you create a new routing, you give it:
- A new routing number
- A routing name
- A routing type, either serial or parallel
Serial means the operations run one at a time. In this case, the routing is set to serial.
Copying operations and adjusting run times
Once the routing header is set up, you can copy from the action menu. You can copy from an existing routing or enter the lines manually. Here, the Back Wheel Routing is copied as the starting point.
After copying, you adjust the operations that differ. In this example, the rim and tyre operation gets a run time of 45 minutes. Since it is a new operation and the exact timing is uncertain, allowing extra time helps ensure you have enough capacity scheduled.
Certifying the routing before use
A routing cannot be used on a production order until it is certified. Once you certify the routing, it becomes available for production orders.
Attaching the routing to an item
The final step is to attach the routing to the item where you want to use it. In this example, the routing is attached to item number 1210.
On the item card, you select BOM and routing. With the BOM already created and the new routing now certified, you select the routing for the item. The item is then ready to use both its bill of materials and its routing in production.
Q&A
Do I need a specific version of Business Central to create a Production Order Routing?
Yes. Production Order Routing is only available in the Premium version of Business Central. It is not included in the Essentials version.
How do I create a new routing quickly?
The fastest method is to copy an existing routing. Create a new routing with a new number, name, and type, then use the copy function from the action menu to copy the lines from an existing routing. You can also enter the lines manually.
What is the difference between a serial and a parallel routing?
A serial routing runs one operation at a time in sequence. A parallel routing allows operations to run simultaneously.
Why can’t I use my new routing on a production order?
A routing must be certified before it can be used on a production order. Certify the routing first, and it becomes available for use.
How do I link a routing to an item?
Open the item card, select BOM and routing, and choose the certified routing for the item. The item can then use both its BOM and routing in production.
