This is what happens in the video
If you run production in Business Central and use the Shortage on Demand Order app, you can drill down directly from a sales order or production order to see exactly which components are missing. The drill-down follows the bill of material hierarchy, so you can trace a shortage all the way down to the specific components that cause it.
The drill-down only works on items that have a production bill of material. If you try it on an item that is not a production item, Business Central tells you so and stops there.
When you open the shortage status, you see the required quantity, the inventory, and the full bill of material list with the required quantity per unit and the total quantity needed. From there you can keep drilling into lower levels of the hierarchy to pinpoint the component that creates the shortage.
Drilling down on shortage status from sales and production orders
In the production or manufacturing module in Business Central, the Shortage on Demand Order app lets you drill down on the shortage status lines straight from a sales order or a production order. This gives you a quick way to understand why an item cannot be fulfilled.
If you try to drill down on an item that is not a production order item, the app simply tells you that this is not a production item. There is nothing further to investigate at that point.
If you drill down on a component shortage for an item that has a production bill of material, for example a bike, the picture changes. Click the shortage and the app opens a page showing the relevant numbers for that item.
What the shortage status page shows
On the shortage status page you see:
- The required quantity, for example eight
- The current inventory
- The bill of material
- The full bill of material list with the required quantity per unit and the total quantity needed
This lays out everything you need to see where the shortage sits in relation to what you have in stock.
Following the shortage through the bill of material hierarchy
The real strength is that you can keep drilling down through the hierarchy. If you have a shortage on item 1200, for example, you can drill into it and get a list with the required quantity for that item, then continue further down.
This way you can follow the shortage all the way through the bill of material hierarchy. When only a few components in the hierarchy are causing the shortage, it is easy to drill down and find exactly which ones they are.
