When you work with production orders in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you can group related orders into an order hierarchy. After you create the hierarchy, you can change the status on each individual order and view the hierarchy from any order in the structure.

You have two ways to view the hierarchy. Use “Show Order Hierarchy” to see the structure from the current production order and down. Use “Show Order Hierarchy from the Top” to see the complete hierarchy from the top-level item, regardless of where your order sits.

From either view, you can show the components for the entire hierarchy. This tells you what materials you need and what work remains before you can finish an order.

Changing status and viewing the hierarchy from any order

Once you have created an order hierarchy, you can change the status on each individual order. From any order, you can also view the hierarchy it belongs to. This works even when you are positioned on an order in the middle of a larger structure.

Show Order Hierarchy from the current production order and down

When you stand on an order in the middle of a hierarchy and use the function “Show Order Hierarchy”, you see the hierarchy from that production order and down. The current order becomes the top-level production order in the view, even though it is part of a higher-level hierarchy.

This view tells you what you need to prepare or finish the order. You might see another production order that is released and that you are waiting on, along with the purchase orders tied to the work. That is important information when your order depends on other orders being completed first.

Show Order Hierarchy from the Top to see the full structure

If you want the complete picture, choose “Show Order Hierarchy from the Top”. This finds the top-level item and unfolds the entire hierarchy. You then see the full structure, where your order is only one of several.

Showing components for the complete hierarchy

As with normal hierarchy work, you can show the components for the complete hierarchy. This gives you the information you need about which materials are required and what you have to do next.

Q&A

How do I view the order hierarchy from a single production order?

Stand on the order and use the function “Show Order Hierarchy”. This shows the hierarchy from that production order and down, treating the current order as the top level of the view.

How do I see the complete order hierarchy?

Use “Show Order Hierarchy from the Top”. This finds the top-level item and unfolds the entire hierarchy, so you can see the full structure with your order as one part of it.

Can I change the status of individual orders in a hierarchy?

Yes. After you create an order hierarchy, you can change the status on each individual order.

How do I find out what materials I need for the orders in a hierarchy?

Show the components for the complete hierarchy. This gives you the information about what you need and what to do to prepare or finish the orders.
