Receiving a transfer order on a simple location in Business Central
When you move items between locations in Business Central, the process happens in two steps: you ship from one location and receive at another. On a simple location that only uses basic inventory functionality, without warehouse documents, receiving a transfer order is a quick task you handle directly on the transfer order itself.
Here is how it works in practice.
Opening the transfer order to receive items
Imagine you are working on a simple location with no warehouse functionality, just the standard inventory functionality. The items have already been shipped from the transfer-from location, and now you need to receive them at the transfer-to location.
Open the transfer order. On the lines, you can see the shipped quantities. In this example, the lines show quantities of 10 and 15 that have already been shipped.
Entering the quantity received
The transfer-to location is the location you are working on. To receive the items, enter the value in the Quantity Received field on each line.
By default, the quantity received matches the quantity shipped. That makes sense in most cases, because what was shipped is what should arrive. You only need to adjust it if something went missing or was held up in transport.
Posting the receipt
Once the quantities are correct, post the receipt. Choose Post, then select Receive. Business Central posts the quantity received.
After posting, the items are available on your new location. You can confirm this on the item card, and the posting creates item ledger entries for that location.
Q&A
How do I receive a transfer order on a location without warehouse functionality?
Open the transfer order, enter the value in the Quantity Received field on each line, and post the receipt by choosing Post and then Receive. Business Central makes the items available on the receiving location and creates the matching item ledger entries.
What is the default value for Quantity Received on a transfer order?
The Quantity Received defaults to the same value as the Quantity Shipped. You only need to change it if part of the shipment was lost or delayed in transport.
How can I confirm that the transferred items arrived at the new location?
Check the item card after posting the receipt. The quantity is available on the new location, and the system creates item ledger entries that document the receipt for that location.
