In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you can print a work instruction directly from a sales order when you handle assembly tasks. This gives you a physical document to take with you while you pick components, assemble the product, and register the time and materials you use.

You print the work order from the Actions menu on the sales order. The document is prepared for you to write in the hours you spend, any extra items you use, and confirm the items already listed for the order.

After you finish the assembly work, you bring the document back to the computer. You enter the information on the sales order, or you post the items and resources directly in journals.

Printing a work instruction from a sales order

If you work as an assembly person handling assembly tied to a sales order, you can print a work instruction that lets you record the information you use while assembling.

Say you open a sales order where you need to pick all the components, put them together, and use some additional parts to finish the order. From the Actions menu on the sales order, you choose Print Work Order. This produces a document prepared for you to fill in by hand.

What the work order document contains

The printed work order is set up for you to enter:

  • The hours you spend on the assembly
  • Any extra items you use that were not already planned
  • The specific items already on the list that you have used

This means you have one document to capture everything that happens while you prepare the goods and pack the order.

Registering the work back in Business Central

Once the physical assembly is done, you take the completed document back to the computer. From there you have two options. You can enter the information directly on the sales order, or you can post the items and resources directly in journals.
