When you use the Job Time mobile app, the registrations your employees make have to end up somewhere in Business Central. There’s a setup that determines exactly which journal your time registrations and timesheets go into. Here’s how to find it and what you need to configure.

The key thing to remember is that the base unit duration field is a system field, not free text. Even if you call your base unit of measure “hour”, Business Central doesn’t know that label means an hour. You have to tell it explicitly through the base unit duration field, and you have to do this for every resource.

Where to find the mobile flow resource setup in Business Central

The setup that controls where registrations are posted lives in the Mobile Flow User Setup. From there you go further into the resource setup, where you can see all your resources listed.

Pick a resource and choose to edit it. That opens the Mobile Flow Resource Setup card. In the footer section of the card you’ll find the settings that control registration on jobs.

What the resource setup controls

The resource setup on jobs determines the following:

  • Whether journal lines are posted when a registration is created
  • Which journal template the registrations use
  • Which base unit of measure you want to register in
  • The base unit duration, where you specify whether one unit equals one hour, one day, and so on

Why the base unit duration is a system field and not text

The base unit duration looks like a simple field, but it’s a system field for a good reason. Business Central doesn’t interpret the name of your base unit of measure. You might call it “hour”, but you could just as easily have called it “bucket” or anything else, and Business Central would treat it the same way.

The base unit duration is what tells the system how much time one unit actually represents. So if you label your unit “hour”, you still need to set the base unit duration to one hour for it to mean anything. Without this, the registrations won’t translate into the right amount of time.

Set up these fields for every resource

This setup isn’t a one-time global configuration. You need to set the relevant fields for each resource in Business Central individually. That means going through the Mobile Flow Resource Setup card for every resource that registers time through the Job Time mobile app.

Q&A

Where do I configure which journal my mobile time registrations go into?

Go to the Mobile Flow User Setup, then continue into the resource setup. Find the resource you want, edit it, and the Mobile Flow Resource Setup card opens. The footer section of that card contains the settings for registration on jobs.

What does the resource setup on jobs control?

It controls whether journal lines are posted when a registration is created, which journal template is used, which base unit of measure you register in, and the base unit duration.

Why is the base unit duration a system field rather than plain text?

Because Business Central doesn’t interpret the name of the base unit of measure. Even if you call it “hour”, the system doesn’t know that label means an hour. The base unit duration is the system field that tells Business Central how much time one unit actually represents, for example one hour or one day.

Do I need to set this up for every resource?

Yes. You have to set up these fields for each resource individually in Business Central.
