This is what happens in the video

Rental management in Business Central works by linking a sales order to one or two transfer orders through a dedicated rental relation line. This article explains how that link is created and what it does.

When you create a sales order for a rental, the system automatically creates a rental relation line. This line connects the sales order line to the transfer orders that move the rental item out to the customer and back again.

When you post and handle the transfer orders, the rental relation line updates the relevant fields on the sales order line. For example, when you extend the rental period, the system updates the quantity you need to invoice on the sales order.

How rental relation lines connect sales orders and transfer orders

The core of rental management is the rental relation line. The sales order line carries a resource that represents the rental itself, while the transfer orders handle the physical items being rented out.

The rental relation line binds one sales order line together with one or two transfer orders. You typically use two transfer orders: one to send the item to the customer and one to return it. The rental relation line holds a link to both the sales order and the transfer orders.

How posting transfer orders updates the sales order

The link works in both directions. When you post and handle the transfer orders, the rental relation line picks up that activity and updates the sales order line accordingly.

This is what keeps invoicing accurate. If you extend the rental period, the rental relation line updates the quantity to invoice on the sales order. You do not have to adjust the sales order manually to reflect changes in the rental.

The whole point of rental management is to bind these two parts together, so the physical movement of items and the financial side of the rental stay in sync.

Q&A

What is a rental relation line in Business Central?

A rental relation line is a line that links a sales order line to one or two transfer orders. The sales order line uses a resource type for the rental, and the transfer orders handle the items being moved. The system creates this line automatically when you create the sales order.

How many transfer orders are linked to a rental?

A rental relation line can bind a sales order line to one or two transfer orders. Two transfer orders are typically used: one to send the item out and one to handle the return.

What happens to the sales order when I post a transfer order?

When you post and handle the transfer order, the rental relation line updates the relevant fields on the sales order line. This keeps the sales order in step with the physical movement of the rented items.

How does extending a rental period affect invoicing?

When you extend the rental period, the rental relation line updates the quantity you need to invoice on the sales order. This ensures the invoice reflects the actual length of the rental without manual adjustment.
