Outbound containers can be added to transfer orders as well as sales orders. So for instance, if I’m creating a new transfer order from whatever location, from one to another location in my system and I add an item number to the transfer order, this is all standard functionality.

Outbound containers in Business Central are not limited to sales orders. You can add transfer order lines to the same outbound container, which means you can use the container functionality to manage goods moving between your own locations as well as goods going out to customers.

You select the container code directly on the transfer order line, exactly as you do on a sales order line. This makes it possible to combine sales order lines and transfer order lines in a single container when that fits your shipping scenario.

A typical mixed scenario is shipping from one country to another, where some goods on the container go straight to customers as sales orders while other goods replenish your inventory at the receiving location as transfer orders.

Adding containers to transfer orders

Outbound containers can be added to transfer orders as well as sales orders. If you create a new transfer order moving an item from one location to another in your system and add an item number to the transfer order, you are working with standard functionality.

On the transfer order line, you can then select the container code, just as you would on a sales order line. By assigning the container code to the transfer order line, you make the container functionality available for transfer orders too.

Mixing sales orders and transfer orders in the same container

When you look at the outbound container list after adding a transfer order to an existing container, you can see the full content of that container. For example, a container might hold two sales order lines and one transfer order line at the same time.

In most cases you would probably add only transfer order lines to a container when you move goods from one of your locations to another. But the system does not force that.

You can also mix the two order types. If you ship from one country to another and have sales orders that you want to deliver directly to customers, while at the same time you want to replenish inventory at the receiving location, you can combine sales orders and transfer orders in the same container.
