On the container card, it is possible to calculate the measurements and volume, meaning after you added the sales order lines or transfer order lines to the container, you could calculate content and value which means that it calculates based on all the order lines and it sums up the net weight, gross weight, the total packages that you have added on a sales order or a transfer order line and the total volume, also the total amount.

The container card in your Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central solution lets you calculate measurements and volume for everything you have loaded into a container. Once you add sales order lines or transfer order lines to a container, you can calculate the total content and value with a single action.

The calculation sums up net weight, gross weight, total number of packages and total volume across all the order lines on the container. It also totals the amount. The fields are filled in automatically, but only when the underlying data is in place. If you have not added information, either through your setup or directly on the lines, the corresponding fields stay empty.

How the container calculation works

When you have added your sales order lines or transfer order lines to the container, the system calculates the content and value based on all those lines. It adds up the net weight and gross weight, the total number of packages and the total volume, along with the total amount. This gives you a complete overview of what the container holds without having to add the numbers yourself.

Why some fields stay empty

The calculated values only appear if the data exists somewhere in the chain. The information has to come either from your setup, where it flows through to the lines, or be entered directly on the lines themselves.

Packages are a good example. The package count only gets filled in if you have manually added packages on the sales order lines or the sales order header. If you have not registered any packages, that field will remain blank even after you run the calculation.

Q&A

What does the calculate function on the container card do?

It calculates the content and value of the container based on all the sales order lines or transfer order lines you have added. It sums up net weight, gross weight, total packages, total volume and the total amount.

Why are some fields on the container card empty after calculating?

The fields only get filled in if the data is available, either from your setup flowing through to the lines or entered directly on the lines. If the information is missing, the field stays empty.

Why is the package count not showing on my container?

Packages are only calculated if you have manually added them on the sales order lines or the sales order header. Without that registration, the package field will remain blank.
