This is what happens in the video
When you finish a project in Business Central, you have a few options for how to handle the job status. The right choice depends on whether the project is truly complete or just needs to be put on hold temporarily. If you use Work-in-Progress, the system also checks that everything is handled correctly before you close the job.
You can block a job for posting or for all activity and reopen it later if you only need to pause it. To mark a project as genuinely finished, set the posting status to Completed. When you do, the system updates the end date and prompts you to calculate Work-in-Progress to create the completion entries.
If you set a job to Completed but the project turns out not to be finished, you can reopen it. The system again verifies that all Work-in-Progress is handled correctly.
Closing a job versus blocking it temporarily
Before you close a job, consider whether you actually want to close it or just block it for a period. These are two different things.
If you only need to put the job on hold, you can block it. You have two options here: block it for posting, or block it for all activity. Either way, you can open the job again later when you need it.
Setting the posting status to Completed
If the project is truly done, you change the status on the posting to Completed. When you do this, the system updates the end date on the job.
If you have a Work-in-Progress method set up on the job, the system checks that everything is handled there. After choosing Completed, it tells you that you need to calculate Work-in-Progress to create the completion entries for the job.
You don’t have to calculate Work-in-Progress right away. You can click no and cancel out of the prompt if you want to handle it later. If the job does not have a Work-in-Progress method assigned, you won’t see that information box at all.
Reopening a completed job
Sometimes you set a job to Completed, but the project turns out not to be finished the way you expected. In that case, you can reopen the job.
When you reopen, the system again makes sure that all the Work-in-Progress has been handled correctly. After that, the job is reopened and ready for further work.
Q&A
What is the difference between closing a job and blocking it in Business Central?
Closing a job by setting the posting status to Completed marks the project as finished and updates the end date. Blocking a job only pauses it for a period. You can block it for posting or for all activity, and you can open it again later.
What happens when you set a job’s posting status to Completed?
The system updates the end date on the job. If the job has a Work-in-Progress method set up, it also prompts you to calculate Work-in-Progress to create the completion entries.
Can you reopen a job that has been marked as Completed?
Yes. If the project wasn’t actually finished, you can reopen the job. The system then checks again that all Work-in-Progress has been handled correctly.
Do you have to calculate Work-in-Progress when you complete a job?
No. The system prompts you to calculate Work-in-Progress, but you can click no and cancel to handle it later. If the job does not have a Work-in-Progress method assigned, you won’t see the prompt at all.
