To post entries to a job in Business Central, you need at least one job task with the type Posting. The job task is the structure that lets you register costs and other entries against a job. Without it, the system has nowhere to post the entries.

You create the job task directly on the job. Open the job, find the task lines, and enter a number and a description for the task.

The Posting type is what makes posting possible. You can use other job task types when you need a more detailed job task structure, for example to group tasks, add headings, or subtotal lines. But for the simplest setup, one task of type Posting is enough to get started.

How to add a job task in Business Central

From the jobs list, open the job you want to work with. Under the tasks section, you find the list of job tasks for that job.

Add a new line and enter:

  • A number for the task
  • A description of the task

Set the task type to Posting so you can post entries to it.

When to use other job task types

The other job task types are useful when you have a more complex job structure. They let you organise tasks into a hierarchy with headings and totals rather than a single flat list. If your job is simple, you do not need them. A single Posting task covers the basics.

Once you have created at least one job task of type Posting, you can start posting entries to the job.
