This is what happens in the video

When you run the planning job in the planning worksheet in Business Central, you end up with a list of suggested action messages. You don’t have to accept all of them at once, and you can control exactly which orders get created. Here is how to carry out action messages selectively, one item at a time.

You can place a checkmark on individual planning lines and use a filter to limit which lines you carry out. When you carry out action messages, Business Central creates production orders, assembly orders, purchase orders, or transfer orders based on the lines you selected.

The first time you carry out action messages, you define which order types to create for each supply type. After that, the system creates firm planned production orders and other orders directly from the checked lines.

Action messages also handle changes to existing orders. A change action updates the quantity, a cancel action deletes the order, and a reschedule action changes the date.

Editing planning lines before carrying out action messages

After you run the planning job in the planning worksheet, you can create or modify the lines as you see fit. Once you are happy with the suggestions, you are ready to carry out the action messages to create the orders.

Carrying out action messages one item at a time

By default, the carry-out function processes everything that has a checkmark. If you don’t want to act on all of it, you can set a filter on your lines so you only carry out one item at a time.

In this example, there are five lines on item number 1001, but only two of them have a checkmark in the accept action message field. If you accept that one, it creates two new orders with quantities of 40 and 80.

From the Process menu, you choose Carry Out Action Messages. This actually creates the orders when you press OK.

Defining the order types to create

The first time you are in the carry-out dialog, you need to define which type of order each action should create:

  • Which type of production order to create when it is a production order
  • Which type of assembly orders
  • Purchase orders
  • Transfer orders

When you select OK, Business Central creates the two firm planned production orders from the lines where you placed a checkmark. After that, you can clear your filter and move on to the next line you want to carry out. Place a checkmark on everything you want to act on, set it to carry out, and the orders get created.

How action messages handle existing orders

Carrying out action messages does more than create new orders. The action depends on what the planning engine suggests:

  • Change quantity: The system changes the quantity on the existing order.
  • Cancel: The system deletes the order.
  • Reschedule: The system changes the date on the order.

Q&A

Can I carry out only some of the planning lines instead of all of them?

Yes. The carry-out function processes everything with a checkmark, but you can set a filter on your lines and place checkmarks only on the items you want. This lets you carry out one item at a time and skip the rest.

What order types can I create when carrying out action messages?

You can create production orders, assembly orders, purchase orders, and transfer orders. The first time you open the carry-out dialog, you define which type of order each action should create.

What happens to existing orders when I carry out action messages?

It depends on the action message. A change action updates the quantity on the order, a cancel action deletes the order, and a reschedule action changes the date on the order.

When do the orders actually get created in the planning worksheet?

The orders are created when you press OK in the Carry Out Action Messages dialog. Up until that point, you are only working with suggestions and checkmarks in the worksheet.
