How to Filter on one or more Fields in Business Central?

You filter down the list by opening the field hoping we can do it here on the show feel the pain.

This is what happens in the video

Filtering lists in Business Central lets you narrow down records by any field, including fields that are not shown as columns on the page. You open the filter pane, add one or more filters, and the list updates immediately to match the parameters you set.

You can stack multiple filters to combine criteria, for example showing only items from a specific vendor that also have a substitution defined.

The filter stays active even if you close the filter pane or navigate to another page and back. To clear the filters and see the full list again, you use Reset filters in the filter pane.

Opening the filter pane and adding filters

You filter a list by opening the filter pane using the Show filter pane option. Once it is open, you can filter the list by different parameters by adding a filter.

You can filter on the fields that are already visible as columns on the page. You can also filter on fields that are not visible on the page at all. For example, you can filter on Vendor Number even if that column is not shown.

When you add a filter value, you can either look it up from a list or simply type it directly. If you filter the list on vendor number 87000, the list shows only the items that have that vendor number.

Combining multiple filters

You are not limited to a single filter. You can add another filter on top of the first one to narrow the results further. For example, after filtering on the vendor number, you can add a second filter on whether a substitution exists and set it to Yes.

The list then shows only the items that match both parameters at the same time.

Filter totals by, calculated fields and flow filters

In the Filter totals by section, you can choose from filters that have been defined on the page. These are calculated fields and flow filters. The selection here is more limited than the general field filters, so you only see the options that apply to the totals.

Filters stay active until you reset them

A filter remains in place even after you close the filter pane. The list stays filtered. If you open a record and then go back to the list, the filter is still applied.

To remove the filtering, you open the filter pane and select Reset filters. The whole list becomes visible again. You can confirm this in the filter view name, which shows as All when no filter is applied and you can see all your items.
