How to view the last known errors in Business Central?

Sometimes if you’re in a hurry, you can get some errors and you don’t have time to read them or you just continue without paying attention to them.

This is what happens in the video

If you work in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and run into an error you didn’t get to read, you can retrieve it again. The “View last error” function shows you the full text of the most recent error message so you can understand what actually went wrong.

You find “View last error” in the help menu under Help and Support, in the troubleshooting section.

The error text often tells you exactly what blocked you. A common example is a missing permission on a customer card. With the error text in hand, you can contact your administrator and ask for the right permissions instead of guessing what happened.

Why error messages get missed in Business Central

When you’re in a hurry, error messages are easy to skip past. You might click through them without reading, or simply not have time to take in what they say. The problem is that once the message is gone, you’re left knowing something failed but not why.

Imagine you’re working as a purchaser and you open a customer to look at the details. An error pops up telling you to call the administrator. You move on to the next customer, and another error appears. At that point you know there’s a problem, but you no longer know what the original message said.

How to use View last error in Business Central

The “View last error” function solves this. It lets you go back and read the most recent error message in full, even after you’ve clicked it away.

Here’s how to find it:

  • Open the Help menu
  • Go to Help and Support
  • Under the troubleshooting section, select View last error

The full error text appears, so you can see exactly what happened.

A practical example: missing permissions

In the purchaser scenario above, opening the error text reveals the real cause. You don’t have permission to some of the data on the customer card. That’s why the system blocked you.

With that information, you can contact your administrator directly and request the correct permissions. Instead of being stuck with a vague “call the administrator” message, you know precisely what access you need to do your job.
