Keyboard shortcuts in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central let you work faster without reaching for the mouse. The most useful ones fall into three groups: shortcuts for lists, shortcuts for lines on orders and journals, and general shortcuts that work across the whole system.
In lists, press F3 to open the search field, and use Alt+F3 to filter on a value you have marked. On order lines and journals, press Alt+Arrow Down to look up values in a field, use Enter to jump to the next quick-entry field, and press F8 to copy the value from the field directly above.
For general use, press Ctrl+F1 to open context-sensitive help for the area you are working in, and Alt+Q to open the “Tell me what you want to do” search across reports, tasks, pages and actions.
You can find the full list of keyboard shortcuts under the Help button in Business Central, where each shortcut is described in detail and shown visually.
Keyboard shortcuts for working in lists
Let us start with a list, for instance the item list. When you want to search for something, press F3. That opens the search field at the top, and you can search from there.
Another favourite is filtering on a value. Mark a value in the list, press Alt+F3, and the list filters to that value. From there you can either remove the filter or add more values. It is a very quick way to filter on a specific value.
Keyboard shortcuts for order lines and journals
When you are working on the lines of a sales order or in a journal, you often need to look up a value in the field you are in. You can use the mouse and click the lookup, but there is also a shortcut: Alt+Arrow Down. That opens the lookup so you can choose the item you want.
To move to the next field, press Enter. Business Central automatically jumps to the next field that has been defined as a quick-entry field.
One of the most useful shortcuts on lines is F8. It copies the value from the field directly above the one you are in. If you need to enter 10 in the Quantity field and the line above already has 10, press F8 instead of typing it.
General shortcuts that work across the system
Two shortcuts work across fields, lists and pages.
When you are in an area you want to know more about, press Ctrl+F1. The help functionality opens and shows you information about the area you are in.
The second is the Tell Me shortcut, also called the search shortcut: Alt+Q. This opens the “Tell me what you want to do” search. With it you can search across reports, tasks and pages. When you are on a page, you can also search for actions within that page.
For example, type “Print” and Business Central first shows you the results on the current page. It then gives you a list of related pages, tasks, reports and analysis based on your search.
Where to find the full list of keyboard shortcuts
The list of shortcuts is long, and it expands with every version. To find all of them, go to the Help button. There you will find the link for keyboard shortcuts. The page describes each shortcut in detail and also shows a visualization of them.
