How to understand the structure of role centers in Business Central?

Role Centers in Business Center all follow the same structure.

This is the Sales Order handlers Role Center, so the information here will be relevant for Sales.

This is what happens in the video

Role Centers in Business Central all follow the same structure. Once you understand how one is built, you can find your way around any of them. This article uses the Sales Order Processor Role Center as the example, so the information shown here is relevant for sales work.

You can use this as a guide to the building blocks of any Role Center: the application bar, the navigation menu and bar, the headline, the actions, and the activity cues.

The application bar at the top of the page

At the very top of the page sits the application bar. Here you can see the application name and find the search button, which is called “Tell Me”. You type what you want to search for, and it helps you find pages, reports, and actions across the system.

In the same area you find the Setup. From here you can design a page, inspect a page, and change your settings. You will also find the Help button here.

The navigation menu and navigation bar

The first line of information below the application bar is the navigation menu. The second line is the navigation bar. Both give you quick access to the pages and lists that matter for your work.

Both the navigation menu and the navigation bar depend on which Role Center you have chosen. A sales role shows different options than a purchasing or finance role.

The headline shows your most relevant business data

Below the navigation lines is the area called the headline. It shows aggregated business data that has been selected as the most relevant for your role. This gives you a quick overview the moment you open Business Central.

Actions let you start tasks directly from the Role Center

On the right-hand side you find a list of actions. The actions make it possible to do a task quickly directly from the Role Center, without having to navigate elsewhere first.

Activity cues for data and tasks

The Role Center also includes a number of activity cues. These come in two types:

  • Data cues show aggregated business data, so you can see at a glance how things stand.
  • Action cues link to a specific task or operation, so you can jump straight into the work.

Like the navigation menu and navigation bar, the cues you see depend on which Role Center you have chosen.
