How to set up alternative unit of measure codes in Business Central?
On the item card, we can assign alternative units of measure, if you handle the same item in different units. More on Business Central here.
This is what happens in the video
In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you can assign alternative units of measure to an item so you can buy, sell, and stock the same item in different units. This is useful when you handle an item both in pieces and in a larger packaging unit, such as a carton.
You set this up on the item card under Navigate, Item, Units of Measure. The base unit of measure defines the smallest unit, for example pieces. You then add as many alternative units as you need, give each one a unit of measure code, and define how many base units it contains. For example, a carton can hold 25 pieces.
Setting up alternative units of measure on the item card
On the item card you can assign alternative units of measure when you handle the same item in different units. You find the setup by going to Navigate, Item, and then Units of Measure.
Here you can see which unit has been defined as the base unit of measure. In this example, the base unit is pieces.
Defining a carton as an alternative unit
You can sell the same item in a carton in addition to selling it in pieces. To do this, you add the carton as an alternative unit of measure and specify how many base units it contains. If one carton holds 25 pieces, you enter the quantity 25 for that unit.
You can set up as many alternative units of measure as you need. For each one, you choose a unit of measure code and define how many of the base unit fit into that specific unit.
