How to set up assembly BOM in Business Central?
On the item card, we find the replenishment section, make sure that the replenishment system is set to assembly and under assembly, we choose the assembly policy, if it should be made to stock or to order.
This is what happens in the video
Assembly BOMs in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central let you define which components and resources go into an assembled item. You set this up in the replenishment section of the item card by choosing the assembly replenishment system and an assembly policy of either make-to-stock or make-to-order.
An assembly BOM applies to one item number only. You cannot reuse the same assembly BOM across multiple items. If you have a similar item, you must build a separate assembly BOM for it.
You can include other items and resources in an assembly BOM. Resources cover the work or capacity needed to put the assembly together.
If your assembly BOM has more than one level, you can view the full structure under the BOM menu by choosing Show BOM.
Setting up assembly in the replenishment section of the item card
On the item card you find the replenishment section. To assemble an item, set the replenishment system to Assembly.
Under assembly you choose the assembly policy. This decides whether the item should be made to stock or made to order.
Opening and creating the assembly BOM
In the assembly BOM field you can see whether an assembly BOM has already been defined for the item. If one exists, you can open it by clicking the link.
You can also reach the assembly BOM through Navigate. Go to Bill of Materials, then Assembly, then Assembly BOM.
Adding items and resources to the assembly BOM
In an assembly BOM you put together the other items needed to make the finished item. You choose the type as Item and enter the item number for each component.
A component item number can itself be an assembly BOM, which means you can have multiple layers in the structure.
You can also add resources to the assembly BOM. These are the resources required to put the assembly together.
For each line you define the quantity. In this example the end product contains 100 of one item and 300 of another item.
Viewing a multi-level assembly BOM structure
When your assembly BOM contains more than one level, you can see the full structure. This is done under the BOM menu by choosing Show BOM.
Here you see that for one box there will be 100 of one item and 300 of another item, including the components from any underlying layers.
Assembly BOMs apply to a single item number
An assembly BOM only applies to one item number. You cannot reuse an assembly BOM for more than one item.
If you have another item that is quite similar, you need to create the same assembly BOM again for that item.
Q&A
How do you set up an item for assembly in Business Central?
On the item card, go to the replenishment section and set the replenishment system to Assembly. Then choose an assembly policy of either make-to-stock or make-to-order.
What is the difference between the assembly policies?
The assembly policy decides whether the item is made to stock, so it is assembled in advance and kept in inventory, or made to order, so it is assembled when a sales order requires it.
Can you add resources to an assembly BOM?
Yes. You can add resources to an assembly BOM to represent the work or capacity required to put the assembly together, alongside the component items.
Can an assembly BOM contain multiple levels?
Yes. A component item number in an assembly BOM can itself be an assembly BOM, which creates multiple layers in the structure. You can view the full multi-level structure under the BOM menu by choosing Show BOM.
Can you reuse the same assembly BOM for several items?
No. An assembly BOM applies to one item number only. If you have a similar item, you must create a separate assembly BOM for it.
How do you view the full structure of a multi-level assembly BOM?
Open the BOM menu and choose Show BOM. This displays the complete structure, including the quantities of components from any underlying layers.
