This is what happens in the video

In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you can create item templates from existing items to speed up the creation of new items. An item template stores the field values you want to reuse, so new items are prefilled automatically. This article explains how to save an item as a template, include dimensions, apply a template when creating a new item, and switch to a different template if you picked the wrong one.

You create a template by selecting an existing item and choosing Actions, Functions, Save as Template. You can include dimensions in the template through the master data by selecting a dimension code and a dimension value code.

When you create a new item, Business Central applies the template automatically. If you have more than one template, the system asks which one to use. If you chose the wrong template, you can apply a different one from Actions, Functions, Apply Template.

Creating an item template from an existing item

To make an item template based on an existing item, open the item and go to Actions, Functions, Save as Template. Give your template a name and edit all the fields you want included in the template. Those field values are what get prefilled when you create new items from the template.

When you are done, save the template by pressing OK.

Including dimensions in an item template

You can add dimensions to your item template. This is done on the master data, where you choose the dimension code and the dimension value code. The selected dimensions are then carried over to every new item created from the template.

Using a template when creating a new item

Once your template is saved, it is used automatically when you add a new item. If you have only one template, its fields are applied directly. If you have more than one template, Business Central asks which template you want to use for that specific item.

For example, if you create a new bike, the fields defined in your template are filled out for you as soon as the template is applied.

Applying a different template to an item

If you chose the wrong template, you can apply another one to the item. Go to Actions, Functions, Apply Template, and choose the correct template. The fields are then updated to match the new template.

Q&A

Yes. You add dimensions on the master data by selecting a dimension code and a dimension value code. The dimensions are then applied to new items created from the template.

What happens when you create a new item with multiple templates available?

Business Central asks which of your templates you want to use for that specific item, and then fills out the fields defined in the chosen template.

How do you change the template after creating an item?

Go to Actions, Functions, Apply Template, and choose the correct template. The item’s fields are then updated to match the new template.
