Presenter: Dennis Schumacher, Sr. Business Central Cons.

Global Master Data Sync uses a central setup table where you control how data synchronization works across companies. This article walks through the settings that matter for the Master company.

You set the company type to Master, Subscriber, or both Master and Subscriber. The Master company controls the data and sends it out to subscribers.

You must give each company a unique ID across all companies. This ID identifies the company in the synchronization setup.

You enable Master Update Record Set to update record sets automatically when you change data in a table that has a corresponding template. If you leave it off, a job queue handles creating and updating the record data instead.

You enable Master Create IC Files to make the company ready to create the intercompany files you send to subscribers.

You enable Master Exchange Record Set to make the company ready to send record sets to partners. If you uncheck it, the exchange stops temporarily until you turn it back on.

Where to find the Global Master setup

The setup for Global Master Data Sync lives in a single setup table. Here you control the different settings that govern how data synchronizes between companies. To open it, search for Global Master Setup in your Business Central environment.

Choosing the company type: Master, Subscriber, or both

The first setting you meet is the company type. This tells the system what role the company plays in the synchronization. You have three options:

  • Master – the company that controls the data and distributes it.
  • Subscriber – a company that receives the data.
  • Master and Subscriber – a company that does both.

In this setup the company is configured as Master.

Setting a unique company ID across companies

When you use Global Master synchronization, you must specify a value that is unique across all companies. This is the company’s ID in the setup. In this example the value is set to “Master”, which is the unique identifier for this company.

Master Update Record Set: automatic updates versus job queue

The Master Update Record Set field controls how changes get into the record sets. When you have it enabled, changes you make in a table that has a corresponding template are updated automatically.

If you do not select this field, a job queue takes over the job of creating and updating the record data before the record data is exchanged.

Master Create IC Files: preparing intercompany files

The Master Create IC Files setting marks the company as ready to create intercompany (IC) files. These are the files you need to send to your subscribers.

When data is exchanged across databases, the IC file log contains a file with the record sets in it.

Master Exchange Record Set: sending data to partners

The Master Exchange Record Set setting controls whether the company is ready to send record sets to the partners. When this is checked, data flows out to the connected companies.

If you uncheck it, the exchange is temporarily stopped. Nothing is sent until you check it again. This gives you a simple way to pause synchronization when you need to.

Q&A

What company types can I choose in Global Master Data Sync?

You can set a company as Master, Subscriber, or both Master and Subscriber. The Master controls and distributes the data, and the Subscriber receives it.

What does the Master Update Record Set setting do?

When enabled, it automatically updates record sets when you change data in a table that has a corresponding template. If you disable it, a job queue creates and updates the record data before it is exchanged.

How do I temporarily stop data synchronization to partners?

Uncheck the Master Exchange Record Set setting. The exchange stops until you check it again.

Why do I need a unique company ID in the setup?

Global Master synchronization requires a value that is unique across all companies so each company can be identified correctly in the synchronization process.

What is the purpose of Master Create IC Files?

It makes the company ready to create the intercompany files that you send to your subscribers. When data is exchanged across databases, the IC file log contains a file with the record sets.
