Presenter: Dennis Schumacher, Sr. Business Central Cons.

If you run a Master Data Management setup in Business Central, you can let the synchronization run in the background using the job queue. This means you don’t have to trigger the data synchronization between companies manually. Instead, you set up a job queue entry that runs on a schedule and pushes records from the subscriber company into the tables automatically.

You set this up from the Master Data Management setup page by creating a job queue entry. By default the entry is created on hold, so you need to set it to Ready before it starts working. Once it’s ready, it picks up any records that haven’t been synchronized yet and processes them.

This walkthrough shows how to set up the job queue entry, configure the schedule, and confirm that the synchronization actually runs.

Setting up the job queue entry for Master Data Management

In the subscriber company, go to the Master Data Management setup page. From there, use the action Create Job Queue Entry. This creates the job queue entry you’ll use to run the synchronization in the background.

When the entry is first created, it’s set on hold. That means it won’t do anything yet. To get it working, you open the job queue entry and change its status to Ready.

Configuring the synchronization schedule

Before setting the entry to Ready, take a look at the schedule. In this example, the job queue entry is configured to run every day from 6:15 in the morning until 23:00 in the evening, and it runs every 15 minutes within that window.

This gives you regular, automatic synchronization throughout the working day without anyone having to start it by hand.

Running and verifying the synchronization

Once you set the job queue entry to Ready, it goes into progress right away and attempts to synchronize the records that weren’t synchronized before.

You can verify that it worked by checking the number of records still waiting to be synchronized. In this example, that number drops to 0, which means all records have been synchronized into the tables.

Q&A

How do you run Master Data Management synchronization in the background in Business Central?

You use the job queue. In the subscriber company, open the Master Data Management setup page and use the action Create Job Queue Entry. Then set the entry to Ready so it runs on a schedule.

Why isn’t my Master Data Management job queue entry doing anything after I create it?

When the job queue entry is first created, it’s set on hold. You need to open it and change its status to Ready before it starts synchronizing records.

How often does the Master Data Management job queue entry run?

That depends on how you configure the schedule. In this example, the entry runs every day from 6:15 to 23:00 and processes records every 15 minutes within that window.

How do you check that the synchronization completed successfully?

Look at the number of records still waiting to be synchronized. When that number reaches 0, all records have been synchronized into the tables.
