Presenter: Dennis Schumacher, Sr. Business Central Cons.

In Business Central’s master data management setup, you can resynchronize data from a master company to a subscribing company without waiting for new data to arrive from the master. You do this from the Global Master Record Data page, where you mark the records you want to resync and reset their synchronization status.

When you reset records as synchronized, you choose whether to reset only the selected records or also include their sub-records, such as default dimensions. Resetting the sub-records as well ensures that related data is synchronized along with the main record.

Resynchronizing master data without new data from the master company

If you have a subscribing company that needs its data resynchronized, you don’t have to wait for the master company to send fresh data. You can trigger the resync directly in the subscribing company.

Open the Global Master Record Data page. Here you find the full list of all the data the subscribing company has received from its master company. This is where you control what gets resynchronized.

Resetting the synchronization status on customer records

Say you want your customer records reset as synchronized. Filter the list down to customers, then mark the records you want to handle. Rather than marking one record at a time, you can mark them all in one go.

Next, use the action to reset the synchronization field. This sets the records back to a synchronized state so they will be picked up again in the synchronization process.

Choosing between selected records and sub-records

When you reset the synchronization field, you have two options. You can reset only the selected records, or you can include the sub-records as well. The synchronization field is then reset for both the selected records and their sub-records.

In a first pass, you might choose to reset only the selected records. After doing this, your customers are no longer marked as synchronized. For example, you could end up with 29 customers that still need to be synchronized.

To bring in the related data, run the reset again on the customers, but this time include the sub-records. The number then changes. In this example it goes from 29 to 56, which means the default dimensions and similar sub-records have now also been reset as synchronized.

Why including sub-records matters

The difference between resetting only the selected records and including the sub-records is what determines how complete your resynchronization is. The sub-records cover the related data attached to each customer, such as default dimensions. If you only reset the main records, that related data is left out. Including the sub-records makes sure everything tied to the customer is synchronized together.

Q&A

Can you resynchronize data in a subscribing company without receiving new data from the master company?

Yes. You can resync data directly in the subscribing company from the Global Master Record Data page. You mark the records you want and reset their synchronization status without waiting for the master company to send new data.

What is the difference between resetting selected records and resetting sub-records?

Resetting only the selected records resets the synchronization field for the main records, such as customers. Including the sub-records also resets related data like default dimensions. In one example, resetting only customers gave 29 records, while including sub-records raised the count to 56.

Where do you find the data received from the master company?

Open the Global Master Record Data page. It shows the full list of all data the subscribing company has received from its master company, and it is where you control what gets resynchronized.
