When you use dimension values to forecast per dimension in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you can filter your forecast on specific dimension values. You set this up manually by pointing out the exact dimension values you want to include in your data selection.

This filtering keeps your forecast lists manageable. Without it, the lists grow longer as you add more dimension values, because you end up including both items with a forecast and items without one.

The selection is manual, not automatic. You pick each dimension value yourself, which gives you direct control over which values appear in your forecast.

Filtering forecasts per dimension value

When you forecast per dimension, you run into a practical problem. On one hand, you may want to include only items with a forecast in a short, focused list. On the other hand, you might also want to include items without a forecast. The more dimension values you bring in, the longer those lists become.

To keep this under control, you can filter on which dimension values to include. The simplest approach is to point out exactly which values you want to use.

How to pick dimension values manually

In the example, a dimension called “Christmas” was set up. When you enter your data selections, you can manually pick the dimension values you want to work with. For instance, you might choose values 11 and 13, or add 14 as well.

Those are the dimension values that get included in the selection, picked by hand. It is not an automatic selection. It is a manual setup where you decide which values matter.

This gives you an easy way to work with specific global dimension values. You filter on which dimension value or global dimension value to include, and only the values you have chosen show up in your forecast.

Q&A

Why do forecast lists grow so long when you forecast per dimension?

The lists grow because they include both items with a forecast and items without a forecast. The more dimension values you add, the longer the lists become.

How do you filter a forecast on specific dimension values in Business Central?

You enter your data selections and manually pick the dimension values you want to include, for example values 11, 13, and 14. Only the values you select appear in the forecast.

Is the dimension value selection automatic or manual?

It is manual. You pick each dimension value yourself rather than relying on an automatic selection, which gives you direct control over which values are included.
