This is what happens in the video

The Forecast per Dimension view in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central lets you add dimension values to forecast entries and plan item availability per dimension. You add a dimension code to a forecast entry, and the system automatically calculates how many different dimensions you have added a forecast to.

You can use this to handle campaigns or other soft reservations. You divide your inventory by dimension while keeping the item on the same location.

The feature works together with apps from Microsoft AppSource such as Graphical Inventory Profile, Reverse Planning, and Assign Quantity. These apps can run with dimension values, so you plan and handle item availability per dimension code.

How the Forecast per Dimension view works

The Forecast per Dimension view is where you forecast and add dimension values to a forecast entry. When you run it, the system automatically calculates how many different dimensions you have added a forecast to.

If you drill down to a dimension code, for example a project code set as a global dimension code, the view only displays the lines where forecast entries actually exist with a dimension code. So even if you have more than four dimension values, you might only see four lines, because forecast entries only exist on those four values.

Using dimensions for campaigns and soft reservations

Adding a dimension code to a forecast entry makes it possible to use campaigns or other soft reservations to divide your inventory while keeping the item on the same location.

In a typical scenario, you might have 350 units on no dimension value and an allocated amount on another dimension value. This lets you set aside stock for a specific purpose without moving the item.

This is useful for campaign handling. For example, you can promise 34 pieces to a dimension code that represents a Christmas dimension or a Christmas campaign for a specific customer.

Combining with other apps for planning per dimension

One of the strengths of this functionality is how it works with other apps from Microsoft AppSource, such as Graphical Inventory Profile, Reverse Planning, and Assign Quantity. These apps can run with dimension values, so you can plan per dimension code and handle your item availability per dimension.

Q&A

What does the Forecast per Dimension view do?

It lets you add dimension values to forecast entries. When you run it, the system automatically calculates how many different dimensions you have added a forecast to and displays a line for each dimension code where a forecast entry exists.

Why does the view only show some of my dimension values?

The view only displays lines where forecast entries actually exist with a dimension code. If you have more dimension values than lines shown, it is because forecast entries only exist on those specific values.

Can I reserve stock for a campaign without moving the item?

Yes. By adding a dimension code to a forecast entry, you can divide your inventory using a soft reservation while keeping the item on the same location. For example, you can allocate an amount to a Christmas campaign dimension for a specific customer.

Which apps work with dimension values for planning?

Graphical Inventory Profile, Reverse Planning, and Assign Quantity can all run with dimension values, so you can plan and handle item availability per dimension code.
