This article explains how to update an intercompany sales order in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central after it has already been released. When you add an item to a released sales order in your sales company, the linked sales order in your supply company updates automatically once you reopen, edit, and release the order again.

To add a new line to a released sales order, you first reopen the order, enter the new sales line, and select the item. You then check item availability in the supply company before choosing a location.

When you release the order again, Business Central pushes the change to the connected sales order in the supply company. You can verify this by opening the supply company and locating the sales order using the sales order number from the sales company.

Updating a released intercompany sales order in Business Central

Intercompany setups in Business Central let one company sell and another company supply the goods. When you release a sales order in your sales company, it automatically creates a matching sales order in the supply company. But what happens when the customer calls back and wants to add an item after the order is already released?

This is a common scenario. The order has gone through, both companies have their records, and then the customer says they need one more item. The good news is that updating the order and keeping both companies in sync is straightforward.

Reopening and editing the sales order

Because the sales order has already been released, you cannot edit it directly. The first step is to reopen the sales order in your sales company. Once it is open for editing, you enter the new sales line and choose the item your customer requested.

Before you commit to the line, you need to confirm that the item is actually available in your supply company. In this example, the item is only available in the location Basic, so that is the location you select for the line.

Releasing the order to sync the supply company

After adding the new item, you release the sales order again. Releasing the order is what triggers the update across companies. The sales order now reflects the extra item your customer asked for.

To check that everything has carried over, go to the supply company. Locate the sales order using the sales order number from your sales company. Open it, and you will see that the order has been updated with the extra item. Both companies are now in sync without any manual rework in the supply company.

Why this matters

The point here is that intercompany sales orders stay connected even after release. You do not have to delete and recreate orders, and you do not have to manually patch the supply company’s order to match. As long as you reopen, edit, and release the order in your sales company, the linked order in the supply company follows along.

Q&A
