The intercompany/”>Intercompany app in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central includes a setup wizard that walks you through every step needed to activate intercompany functionality. You start the wizard from the activation notification that appears in your company after installing the app.

When you set up an inventory (supply) company, you define the company type, select your intercompany partner, assign a shared intercompany partner code, set up the intercompany customer with posting groups and a location code, map your G/L accounts, and choose which inventory locations your sales company is allowed to see.

The intercompany partner code must be identical in both companies. If you use different codes in your supply company and your sales company, the connection will not work correctly.

You can map G/L accounts automatically if the chart of accounts is the same in both companies. If the accounts differ, you map them manually. All of these settings can be changed later.

Activating intercompany from the wizard

Once you have downloaded the Intercompany app, a message appears in your company prompting you to activate intercompany. Clicking it opens a wizard that guides you through all the setup needed for intercompany to work.

This walkthrough covers the setup for a supply company. The setup for a sales company is handled separately. To begin, enter your email address, click setup, and continue to the next step.

Choosing the company type and intercompany partner

In the wizard you choose which type of intercompany company you are configuring. In this case it is an inventory company.

You then select your intercompany partner, which is the sales company. Pick the company from the list, confirm, and move on.

Setting the intercompany partner code

Next you define an intercompany partner code for the company. This is one of the most important details to get right: the code must be the same code you set up in your other company.

For example, you might use supply 01 here. The wizard also suggests an intercompany partner code for your sales company, and you can accept the suggestion. Just remember that the same intercompany partner code needs to be used in your sales company as well.

Defining the intercompany customer and posting groups

You then define an intercompany customer, which represents your sales company. The wizard suggests one, but you can choose an existing customer or create a new one.

For this customer you set up the posting groups and a location code. These can be changed later if needed.

Mapping G/L accounts

The wizard lets you create the mapping for your G/L accounts. If the accounts are the same in both companies, you can map them automatically. If they are not the same, you should map them manually.

As with the other settings, you can always change the mapping later.

Choosing which locations the sales company can see

The final step is defining which location in your supply company the sales company is allowed to pick from. This controls the inventory profile your sales company sees when they are working on a sales order or purchase order.

You select the relevant locations from the list, confirm your choice, and the setup is finished.

Q&A

How do I start the intercompany setup in Business Central?

After you download the Intercompany app, a message appears in your company prompting you to activate intercompany. Click it to open the setup wizard, which guides you through every step.

Does the intercompany partner code need to match between companies?
