This is what happens in the video

When you create a drop-ship order in an intercompany setup, the shipping address determines where your supply company sends the goods. The shipping address from your sales order carries over to the purchase order in the supply company, so getting it right matters.

In Business Central you can use a custom shipping address on the sales order. When you choose a custom address and type in the delivery details, that address transfers to the supply company along with the order.

Once the order is released and sent to the supply company, you can no longer change the shipping address in the sales company. If the address needs to change after that point, you have to edit it directly on the sales order inside the supply company.

Setting the shipping address on a drop-ship order

Start from a sales order in your sales company. The order has a customer, a requested delivery date, and an item. Scroll down to the shipping section to handle the delivery address.

You have a few options for the shipping address. You can pick an alternative shipping address that is already set up, or you can use a custom address. When you choose the custom address option, you can type in a completely different address than the one on the customer card.

How the shipping address transfers to the supply company

After you set the custom address, release the order. Releasing the order sends the shipping information to the supply company, so this is the step that pushes your address across.

In the supply company, open the order and update it. On that order you will see two things:

  • The customer is your sales company, because that is who the supply company is selling to internally.
  • The shipping address is the custom one you typed in on the sales order, pointing to your end customer’s delivery location.

This is exactly what you want with a drop-ship setup: the supply company invoices your sales company but ships directly to your customer.

Changing the address after the order is sent

Timing is the thing to watch here. Once the order has been sent to the supply company, the shipping address is locked in the sales company. You cannot change it from there anymore.

If the delivery address needs to change after the order has gone through, go to the supply company and edit it directly on the sales order there.

Q&A

How do I send a different shipping address to the supply company on a drop-ship order?

On the sales order, scroll to the shipping section and choose the custom address option. Type in the delivery address you want, then release the order. The custom address transfers to the supply company.

Why does the supply company show my sales company as the customer?

In an intercompany drop-ship setup, the supply company sells to your sales company. That is why your sales company appears as the customer, while the shipping address points to your end customer’s location.

Can I change the shipping address after the order is sent to the supply company?

Not from the sales company. Once the order has been sent, the address is locked there. To change it, edit the shipping address directly on the sales order in the supply company.
