This is what happens in the video

If you run an intercompany setup in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you can have the promised delivery date flow automatically from your supply company back to your sales order in the sales company.

When the supply company enters a promised delivery date on the linked sales order, Business Central updates the promised delivery date on the original sales order in your sales company.

You do not need to type the date manually in both companies. The two sales orders are linked by a reference number, so the update happens across the companies automatically.

How the promised delivery date flows between companies

When you send a sales order from your sales company to your supply company, you typically want to know when the goods can actually be delivered. The promised delivery date is the field that answers that question, and you want it updated on your sales order once the supply company has looked at the order.

This is exactly what happens in an intercompany setup. The moment the sales order is updated in the supply company, the promised delivery date carries over to the order in the sales company.

How the two sales orders are linked

The sales order in the sales company and the corresponding order in the supply company are tied together by a reference number. In the example, both orders share a reference number that ends in 12, so you can confirm that you are looking at the same order in both companies.

That link is what makes the automatic update possible. When the supply company enters the promised delivery date on its order, the system knows which sales order in the sales company to update.

Trying it out step by step

Here is how the flow looks in practice:

  • Switch to the supply company and open the linked sales order.
  • Enter the promised delivery dates on the order lines. In the example, two different dates are entered to show that each line can have its own date.
  • Release the order again.
  • Switch back to the sales company and press F5 to refresh.

After the refresh, the promised delivery date is updated on the sales order in the sales company. You did not touch the field there. The supply company entered the date, and Business Central handled the rest.

Q&A

How does the promised delivery date get updated on a sales order in an intercompany setup?

When the supply company enters the promised delivery date on the linked sales order and releases it, Business Central automatically updates the promised delivery date on the corresponding sales order in the sales company. You refresh the order with F5 to see the new date.

How are the sales orders in the two companies connected?

The orders are linked by a reference number. In the example, the reference number ends in 12 and matches in both the sales company and the supply company, which lets the system update the correct order automatically.

Do I have to enter the promised delivery date manually in both companies?

No. You only enter the promised delivery date in the supply company. It then flows automatically to the sales order in the sales company.

Can each order line have its own promised delivery date?

Yes. In the example, two different promised delivery dates are entered on the order, and both carry over to the sales company.
