A blanket sales order in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central lets you set up an agreement to sell a fixed quantity of an item to a customer over time. You agree on the total quantity, price, and line discount up front, then release the goods in batches as the customer needs them.

You create a blanket sales order by searching for “Blanket Sales Order” in Business Central and pressing New. You assign the customer, set a due date, add an item line, enter the agreed quantity, and apply a line discount if relevant.

The line discount on a blanket sales order is entered as a percentage on the line. For example, you can give a 2% discount on the agreed quantity.

What a blanket sales order is used for

A blanket sales order is an agreement with a customer to deliver a fixed quantity of an item over a period of time. Instead of creating a single sales order for the whole amount, you register the overall agreement once and then deliver in smaller batches as the customer places call-offs against it.

This is useful when a customer commits to buying a large quantity but wants the goods delivered gradually. You lock in the price and the discount from the start, and the blanket order keeps track of how much has been delivered and how much remains.

How to create a blanket sales order in Business Central

Start by searching for “Blanket Sales Order” in Business Central and press New. Tab past the number field so the system assigns the document number automatically.

Then fill in the details:

  • Select the customer the agreement is for, for example a customer like Future Bikes.
  • Set a due date. You can, for instance, give the customer 14 days.
  • On the lines, set the Type to Item.
  • Choose the item you are selling, for example a touring bike.
  • Enter the agreed quantity, for example 100 pieces.
  • Add a line discount if you have agreed on one, for example 2%.

Once you have filled in the customer, the date, and the item line with quantity and discount, you have a complete blanket sales order ready to work with.
