How to add a dimension to customers in Business Central
If you’re working with dimensions in Business Central, you can add default dimension to many of the master data, for instance, the customer table.
This is what happens in the video
Default dimensions in Business Central let you assign dimension values to your master data so they automatically follow your transactions through to the G/L entries. This makes it easy to filter and report on dimensions like department and project across the system.
You can add default dimensions to many master data tables, including the customer table. When you set a default dimension on a customer, it carries through to open sales documents, then to posted sales documents, and is finally stored with the G/L entries when you post.
How default dimensions work on master data
If you work with dimensions in Business Central, you can add default dimensions to many of your master data tables. The customer table is a common example.
To set this up, open the customer card and navigate to the dimensions for that customer. Here you can define which dimension values apply to that specific customer. For example, you might give a customer a department code with the dimension value A and a project code with the dimension value 11.
How default dimensions flow through documents and entries
Once you have entered default dimensions on the customer, they follow the transaction through the whole process. The dimensions populate on the open sales documents, carry over to the posted sales documents, and are stored with the G/L entries when you post.
Because the dimension values end up on the G/L entries, you can filter and report by those dimensions throughout the system. That gives you a clear way to break down your numbers by department, project, or any other dimension you use.
