In standard Business Central, you can change the routing status on a production order line directly from the shop floor. This article walks through how the routing status works in standard Business Central and how a shop floor user can update it without navigating deep into the production order.

The routing status field has four possible values: Finished, In Progress, Planned, or blank (nothing). You change it per operation on a production order line.

A shop floor user does not need to open the full production order to update the routing status. Instead, you use a simplified process: choose Change Routing Status, scan or select the production order number, select the operation number, and set the routing status to the value you need.

How routing status works in standard Business Central

On every production order line in standard Business Central, you have a routing status field. It can hold one of four values: Finished, In Progress, Planned, or nothing at all. The status describes where a given operation stands in the production process.

To see it in action, you can open a production order, for example order 149, and enter the routing. There you find the routing status on each operation. As an example, you can change operation number 30 to Finished. This is the standard behaviour, but it requires you to navigate into the production order itself.

Why shop floor users need a simpler way to update routing status

Normally, a shop floor user would not navigate into the production order to change the routing status. Opening the full order and finding the right operation is more than most operators should have to do during a shift. The point is to make the update quick and reliable from where the work actually happens.

Changing routing status from the shop floor

From the shop floor window, the process is straightforward:

  • Choose Change Routing Status.
  • Select or scan the production order number.
  • Select the operation number.
  • Set the routing status to the value you want, for example Finished.

Once you confirm, the status is updated. That is the easy way to change the routing status without working inside the production order itself.

Q&A

What values can the routing status field have in Business Central?

The routing status field can be set to Finished, In Progress, Planned, or left blank (nothing).

Where do you find the routing status in a production order?

You find the routing status on each operation in the routing of a production order line. For example, you can open the production order, enter the routing, and see the status for each operation such as operation number 30.

How does a shop floor user change the routing status without opening the production order?

The user chooses Change Routing Status, scans or selects the production order number, selects the operation number, and sets the routing status to the desired value. This avoids navigating into the full production order.
