The shop floor mobile window in Business Central can require a PIN code before a user gets access. You enable this by setting the password mandatory field in the mobile flow user setup. This stops users from registering production on someone else’s resource number.

The PIN code is stored as a hidden field on the resource card. Each user gets their own PIN code there.

The PIN prompt works regardless of whether the user is locked to a fixed resource. As long as the password mandatory field is checked, the user is prompted for a PIN code when they open the shop floor mobile.

Standard behaviour without a PIN code

When you open the shop floor mobile window and the user is set up as a fixed resource, the window simply opens. From there the user can start clicking whatever function they want and enter a production order. No login or verification stands between the user and the registration.

That is fine in many cases, but it means there is nothing to confirm who is actually making the registration.

Requiring a PIN code in the mobile flow user setup

In the mobile flow user setup you can change this. The setup has a field called password mandatory on the Windows user. When you checkmark that field, the user is required to identify themselves before they can use the shop floor mobile.

The PIN code itself lives on the resource setup card. On the resource you will find a hidden field for the PIN code, and each user can have their own PIN code stored there.

Once password mandatory is checked, opening the shop floor mobile prompts the user to enter their PIN code. This happens whether or not the user is locked to a fixed resource.

Preventing registrations on the wrong resource

The main reason to use a PIN code is control over who registers on which resource. Without it, a user could enter production on another user’s resource number. The PIN code makes sure that only the person who knows the code can register on that resource.

If keeping registrations tied to the correct user matters in your setup, the PIN code is the way to enforce it.
