If you use the start/stop functionality for time registration on production orders in Business Central, you can run it directly from the operation view. Select the line for the operation you want to register time on, then choose the start/stop function. The system asks whether you want to register run time or setup time, and you can also stop a registration that is already running. Each action creates a time entry. You can let the system track the time automatically, or you can type in a specific number of minutes manually.

Using start/stop time registration from the operation view

The start/stop functionality lets you register time on a production order without leaving the operation view. You click the line for the specific operation, then choose the start/stop function. From there the system prompts you to choose whether you want to start run time or setup time. If a registration is already running, you can stop it from the same place. Once you confirm with OK, the system creates a time entry.

Entering minutes manually or letting the system track time

When the start/stop window opens, you have two options for how the time gets recorded.

  • You can enter a specific number of minutes, just like you would in a normal time entry. If you type 23, the system adds 23 minutes, while still creating a proper start and stop entry.
  • You can leave the field blank and press yes. The system then simply starts the operation and tracks the time for you.

This gives you flexibility. Use automatic tracking when you want the system to measure the actual time spent, or enter the minutes yourself when you already know how long the work took.

Q&A

How do I start time registration on a production order from the operation view?

Select the line for the specific operation in the operation view, choose the start/stop function, then pick whether you want to register run time or setup time and confirm with OK. This creates a time entry.

Can I enter a specific number of minutes instead of letting the system track the time?

Yes. In the start/stop window you can type the number of minutes manually. For example, entering 23 adds 23 minutes while still creating a start and stop entry.

What happens if I leave the minutes field blank?

If you leave the field blank and press yes, the system just starts the operation and tracks the time automatically.

Can I register both run time and setup time with start/stop?

Yes. When you start a registration, the system asks whether you want to register run time or setup time, so you can choose the correct type for the work being done.
