In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you register setup time on a production order using the register setup time action. When you post 23 minutes of setup time on a drilling operation, you get a matching capacity ledger entry showing the drilling setup time of 23 minutes. This article walks through that process step by step.

Registering setup time on a production order in Business Central

Setup time is exactly what it sounds like: the time it takes to prepare a machine or work centre before production runs. In Business Central, you register it directly on the production order so the actual time spent is captured in the system.

The process is straightforward. Start by clicking the register setup time action. Then select the production order number you are working on, followed by the operation number for the specific task.

Say you are doing the drilling operation. You enter the setup time it actually took, for example 23 minutes, and register the data. That is all it takes to record the setup time against the right operation on the right order.

Checking the capacity ledger entry

Once you have registered the setup time, you can verify what happened by looking at the capacity ledger entry. This is where Business Central records the actual time posted against operations.

For the example above, you would expect to see a line showing the drilling setup time of 23 minutes. That confirms the registration went through correctly and the time is now tied to the operation in your production data.
