The shop floor overview window in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central uses a set of filters in the footer section, and those filters do not all behave the same way. Some apply to the production order lines and operation lines, while others only make sense for the capacity load lines. Knowing which is which makes the overview far easier to work with.

The left-hand side fields generally apply to the operation lines. The only exception is “Include Load from Journals and Orders,” which only makes sense for the capacity load lines.

The “Show Machine Centers” checkmark controls whether operations from machine centers appear, regardless of whether you have set a work center filter.

The “Operation View” field on the right-hand side determines whether an operation must fall entirely within the date filter or only partly within it.

You can narrow the list down to the first, last, or next operation using three separate checkmarks, and you can add routing status and previous routing status filters from the action menu.

How the footer filters in the shop floor overview window work

The shop floor overview window contains a lot of filtering, and it applies across three areas: production order lines, capacity load lines, and operation lines. The important thing to understand is that the individual fields in the footer do not all target the same part of the window.

The fields on the left-hand side all apply to the operation lines, with one exception. The “Include Load from Journals and Orders” field only makes sense for the capacity load lines, because that is where it is used to calculate the load. The rest of the left-hand filtering applies broadly across the lines.

Production order status, date filters, and operation view

The left-hand filtering includes which status on production orders you want to see and which specific production orders you are filtering on in the production order filter. There are also From and To dates.

The From and To dates relate closely to the first, last, and next operation logic and to the operation view. Together they decide which operations fall inside the period you are looking at.

On the right-hand side, the “Operation View” field determines whether an operation needs to be fully contained within the date filter or whether it only needs to be partly inside it. In other words, you can choose whether both the start and the end of the operation must fall within the date filter interval, or whether it is enough for the operation to overlap with it.

Work center and machine center filters

You can apply a work center filter if you are working with work centers, and you can apply a machine center filter as well. If you add a machine center filter, only that machine center is included.

The “Show Machine Centers” checkmark works alongside these filters. If you check “Show Machine Centers”, the window also shows operations from machine centers. This happens whether or not you have added a work center filter. If you deselect the checkmark, the machine center operations are not shown.

First, last, and next operation filters

Three checkmarks let you filter on first, last, and next operation. These are all about narrowing down how many operations you see. You can use them to see everything you are about to start, everything you are about to finish, or the next ongoing operation. This keeps the overview focused on what is relevant right now instead of every operation in the period.

Routing status and previous routing status filters

You can also add a routing status filter and a previous routing status filter. Both are set from the action menu, where you select which routing status you want to see. This lets you control the overview based on where each operation sits in its routing.

Q&A

Which fields in the shop floor overview footer apply to the operation lines?

The fields on the left-hand side all apply to the operation lines, except for “Include Load from Journals and Orders,” which only applies to the capacity load lines for calculating load.

What does the “Operation View” field do?

It determines whether an operation must fall fully within the date filter or whether it only needs to be partly within the date filter interval, meaning either the start or the end can fall inside it.

How do I show operations from machine centers in the overview?

Check the “Show Machine Centers” checkmark. The overview then includes operations from machine centers whether or not you have set a work center filter. If you deselect it, machine center operations are not shown.

How do I filter on first, last, or next operation?

Use the three checkmarks for first, last, and next operation. They narrow down the operations shown so you can see everything you are about to start, everything you are about to finish, or the next ongoing operation.

Where do I set the routing status and previous routing status filters?

You add both filters from the action menu, where you select which routing status you want to see.
