With master data information, it’s possible to copy serial numbers and lot numbers if you use the serial or lot number list.

If you manage serial numbers or lot numbers with a lot of master data attached, you can copy that information to new records instead of typing everything from scratch. The Copy function on the serial number list and lot number list lets you take an existing serial number, including its master data, and create one or more new serial numbers based on it.

You can create several serial numbers in one go. You set the beginning serial number, the description, and the item number, and choose whether to copy the master data along with it.

This is useful when you use serial numbers for quality control, machinery, or anything else where each number carries many specifications. The same function works on lot numbers.

Copying serial numbers and lot numbers with master data

The serial number list and lot number list include a Copy function that lets you duplicate an existing record together with its master data information. You select the serial number you want to use as the basis, choose Copy serial number, and the system takes the item number and serial number from the marked record so you can create a new one.

You are not limited to a single record. You can create many serial numbers at once from the same source. When you do, you specify the beginning serial number, a new description, and the item number for the new records.

Choosing whether to copy master data

When you copy, you decide whether to include the master data information on the new serial numbers. If you use serial numbers to hold all kinds of master data, this option carries everything over to the new serial number automatically. After the copy, you can look at the specification for each new serial number and confirm that all the master data was brought across, then adjust the details on individual records as needed.

When this is worth using

This approach pays off when your serial numbers carry a large amount of master data. Typical examples include serial numbers used for quality control or for machinery, where each number has very many specifications attached. Instead of re-entering all of that for every new serial number, you copy an existing one and change only what differs.

The function works the same way on lot numbers, so the same method applies whether you track items by serial number or by lot.

Q&A

Can I copy serial numbers and lot numbers in Business Central?

Yes. The serial number list and lot number list both include a Copy function. You select an existing record and create one or more new serial or lot numbers based on it.

Can I create several serial numbers at once?

Yes. When you copy, you set the beginning serial number, the description, and the item number, and the system creates multiple new serial numbers in one operation.

Does copying a serial number also copy its master data?

Only if you choose to. The copy dialog includes an option to copy the master data information. If you select it, all the master data from the source record is carried over to the new serial numbers.

When is copying serial numbers with master data most useful?

It is most useful when each serial number carries a large amount of master data, for example in quality control or for machinery with many specifications. Copying saves you from re-entering all of that information manually.
