In Business Central, you can run a simple receive flow on a location that only requires bin codes and nothing else. This article walks through how to receive a purchase order, assign items to bins, and post the receipt when you only need bin-level handling without full warehouse documents.

Business Central cannot print a receipt list directly from a purchase order by standard. You need to modify one of your documents or use an app like Document Customizer to create a report template that shows the bin code, which you can then use as a put-away document.

You can set a default bin on the item card so the bin code fills in automatically on the purchase line. If you have not set a default bin, you can enter the bin code manually on each line.

Setting up a location that only requires bin codes

This flow applies to a location set up to require bins but nothing more advanced. On a purchase order using such a location, you add your items and quantities, and you assign each line to a specific bin.

The bin code is not shown by default on the purchase line. If you scroll right on the purchase lines, you will find the bin code column. In this example, the bin code 1201 was added manually to one of the lines.

If you have set up a default bin on the item card, Business Central fills the bin code in automatically. When you enter a purchase line for an item that has a default bin attached to its bin content, the bin code appears on the line without you typing it.

Printing a put-away document from a purchase order

Business Central does not let you print a receipt list from a purchase order by standard. Printing the lines together with the expected bin you want to put items into is not part of the standard functionality.

To get around this, you modify one of your documents. In this example, the Document Customizer app was used to build a separate report template instead of the normal purchase order. The template displays the bin code on the purchase order so you can use it as a put-away document.

When you preview the document, you see the purchase lines along with a column showing the bin code. You can use this directly from the purchase order to put the items away into the right bins. If you decide to use different bins, you can write the chosen bin directly on the document.

Posting the purchase order with bin codes

After the put-away step, you go back into the purchase order and check your quantities. You confirm the quantities, confirm or change the bin codes, and then post the purchase order.

Once posted, the received quantity is filled in on the purchase order. To verify the result, open the item and look at the bin contents. On the bin-only location, you can see the received quantity has been added to the correct bin. In this example, 100 pieces were added to the bin code on the first line.

This is how you receive and post a simple purchase order on a location that only requires bin codes.

Q&A

Can you print a receipt list from a purchase order in Business Central by standard?

How does the bin code get filled in on a purchase line?

You can enter the bin code manually on each purchase line. If you set up a default bin on the item card, Business Central fills in the bin code automatically when you add that item to a purchase line.

Why is the bin code not visible on my purchase lines?
