This article walks through the outbound warehouse flow in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central when you use a location that has shipment, pick, and bin handling enabled, but does not have the Directed Put-away and Pick checkmark turned on. This is the setup often referred to as a full warehouse location without directed put-away and pick.
In this setup, you create a warehouse shipment from a released sales order, then create a warehouse pick directly. You do not need to release the warehouse shipment manually. When you create the pick, Business Central changes the shipment status from Open to Released automatically.
You register the pick to create warehouse entries that move the items to the shipment bin, then post the warehouse shipment. Posting the shipment also posts the sales order in one step.
You can change bin codes both on the sales line and on the pick line during the process. The sales line bin code is treated as a suggestion when the location requires shipment, so Business Central updates it later to the actual shipment bin once you post.
Location setup for a full warehouse location without directed put-away and pick
The location used in this example is the main location. It has all the checkmarks enabled except for the Directed Put-away and Pick checkmark, which controls the fixed-control warehouse functionality. With this setup you get shipment, pick, and bin handling, but you skip the most advanced level of warehouse control.
The flow is almost identical to a location that has the Directed Put-away and Pick checkmark enabled. There is a small difference, but not much.
The outbound flow step by step
The complete flow looks like this:
- Create and release a sales order.
- Create a warehouse shipment.
- Create the pick directly from the shipment, which releases the shipment automatically.
- Perform the pick, changing bins if needed.
- Register the pick, which creates the warehouse entries.
- Post the warehouse shipment, which also posts the sales order.
Creating and releasing the sales order
Start by making a new sales order for your customer with two item lines on the main location. When you enter the lines, Business Central automatically suggests bin codes and displays them on the sales line.
You can change the bin code on the sales line. When you do, Business Central tells you that the location requires shipment, so the entered information might be disregarded. The change is still possible, but the bin code on the sales line is only a suggestion at this point.
Before you can create a warehouse shipment, you need to release the sales order.
Creating the warehouse shipment and pick
Once the sales order is released, create the warehouse shipment directly from the order. Business Central opens the shipment automatically, and its status is Open.
From the shipment, create the pick. When you create the pick, the shipment status changes automatically to Released. You do not need to release the shipment as a separate action. You now have a pick activity, and the shipment status is Released.
You can find the pick from the main menu or navigate to it directly from the warehouse shipment.
Performing and registering the pick
On the pick line, you can change the bin code you want to use. Business Central suggests which bin to take the item from, but while performing the pick you can change both the bin code and the quantity to handle.
You can perform the pick in two ways:
- Print the pick on paper, walk around the warehouse, and enter the quantity handled and the bin code afterwards.
- Use a handheld device.
After registering the quantity to handle and finishing the pick, you register the pick. This creates warehouse entries that move the items to the shipment bin and deletes the pick line. The warehouse shipment is now ready to ship.
Posting the shipment and completing the sales order
You can post the warehouse shipment directly from the shipment. Posting the shipment posts both the warehouse shipment and the sales order.
When you look back at the sales order, the bin code is now changed to the shipment bin, the bin where the item was actually placed and shipped from. The quantities shipped reflect what you picked.
This is how the outbound flow works on a full warehouse location without the Directed Put-away and Pick checkmark.
Q&A
Do I need to release the warehouse shipment manually in this setup?
No. When you create the pick from the warehouse shipment, Business Central changes the shipment status from Open to Released automatically.
Can I change the bin code during the pick?
Yes. Business Central suggests a bin code on the pick line, but while performing the pick you can change both the bin code and the quantity to handle.
What happens when I post the warehouse shipment?
Posting the warehouse shipment posts both the shipment and the sales order. The bin code on the sales order is updated to the shipment bin the item was shipped from.
What is the difference between this location and one with Directed Put-away and Pick enabled?
This location has shipment, pick, and bin handling enabled but not the Directed Put-away and Pick checkmark, which controls the fixed-control warehouse functionality. The flow is almost the same, with only a small difference between the two.
How can I perform the pick physically in the warehouse?
You can either print the pick on paper and walk around the warehouse to enter the quantity handled and change the bin code, or you can use a handheld device.
