This is what happens in the video
In Business Central, you can post finished production output directly to a specific bin using an inventory put-away, instead of posting straight from the journals. This works on any location set up with “Require Shipment” or “Require Receive” enabled.
To do this, you create an inbound warehouse request from the production order. This signals to the warehouse that the quantity is finished and ready to be picked up. You then create an inventory put-away manually on the location, fetch the production order as the source, and the system creates a line with the remaining quantity.
When you register the inventory put-away, Business Central posts both the output entry to the item ledger and the warehouse entry to the bin you selected. This lets your warehouse employees use the same scanning and put-away workflow they already know, while you keep control over which bin the items land in.
Posting production output on locations with directed put-away and pick
If you work on a location in Business Central where “Require Shipment” or “Require Receive” is enabled, you have two options for posting finished production output. You can post directly from your journals, or you can create an inventory put-away to handle the output through the warehouse.
The inventory put-away approach matters when you want your warehouse staff to handle finished goods the same way they handle everything else. If your team uses scanners, the put-away gives them a familiar interface and lets you control exactly which bin the items go into.
Example: outputting the remaining quantity on a production order
Consider a production order with a quantity of six. You have already posted a finished quantity of three, so your item ledger entries show three. You now want to output the remaining three through the warehouse.
The steps look like this:
- Create an inbound warehouse request from the production order. This tells the warehouse that the finished quantity is ready to be picked up.
- Create an inventory put-away manually on the location. In this case it is the main location.
- Select the source number directly, or use the function to pick the source and fetch the production order. Business Central creates a line for the remaining quantity.
- Assign the bin you want the items put away to.
- Register or post the inventory put-away.
What Business Central posts behind the scenes
When you post the inventory put-away, Business Central creates both the correct warehouse entry and the output entries in one step. After posting, the inventory put-away is deleted.
In the example, the finished quantity on the production order updates to six. If you open the item ledger entries, you see that the last three have been posted. If you navigate into the warehouse entries, you can see that the three were placed on bin code 11.02, exactly as selected during the put-away.
Why use inventory put-away for production output
Using an inventory put-away gives you two things at once. You get a documented warehouse process, and you give your warehouse employees a workflow they already know from handling other items.
This is especially useful if your warehouse runs on scanners. The employee uses the same functionality for production output as for any other put-away, and you decide which bin code the items are placed into directly.
Q&A
How do I post finished production output to a specific bin in Business Central?
Create an inbound warehouse request from the production order, then create an inventory put-away on the location. Fetch the production order as the source, assign the bin you want, and register the put-away. Business Central posts both the output entry and the warehouse entry to the bin you selected.
When can I use an inventory put-away for production output?
You can use it on any location where “Require Shipment” or “Require Receive” is enabled. On these locations you can either post directly from the journals or handle the output through an inventory put-away.
What happens to the inventory put-away after I post it?
The inventory put-away is deleted after posting. Business Central creates the correct warehouse entry and the output entries, updates the finished quantity on the production order, and posts the item ledger entry for the handled quantity.
Can I handle only part of the remaining production quantity?
Yes. When you fetch the production order into the inventory put-away, Business Central creates a line for the remaining quantity. In the example, three of six were already posted, and the put-away handled the remaining three.
Why use an inventory put-away instead of posting from the journal?
The inventory put-away gives your warehouse employees the same workflow they use for handling other items, which is easier if they work with scanners. It also lets you choose exactly which bin code the items are placed into.
