How do you configure default bins?

Using warehouse management functionality and production orders at the same time would normally require you to set up default bins on the location card that the system would use.

This is what happens in the video

Warehouse management and production orders work together in Business Central through default bins set up on the location card. You define three bins: the open shop floor bin, the to-production bin, and the from-production bin. These bins control how items move into a production order for consumption and back out again when you post output.

You set the open shop floor bin code for internal handling tied to the production order. You use the to-production bin code when you pick or move items into the production order. You use the from-production bin code where items land when you post output and move them back into inventory.

You can override the location-level bin setup on the work center or machine center card. This lets you point an output work center at the end of your production line to its own from-bin, so the item moves from the production area back into inventory at the correct location.

Setting up default bins for production on the location card

If you want to use warehouse management functionality together with production orders, you normally need to set up default bins on the location card. The system uses these bins to handle the flow of components and finished items through production.

On a simple location, such as a distribution location, you scroll down to the bins section and find the open shop floor bin and the to- and from-production bins. The bin code you enter here is used as the default when you consume items to the production order, move items into the production order for consumption, and when you output on the production order.

The same applies to a warehouse location that has the directed put-away and pick checkmark enabled. Here you need to enter the same three bin codes.

What the three production bins do

Each bin code has a specific role in the production flow:

  • Open shop floor bin code: the bin used for internal handling related to the production order.
  • To-production bin code: the bin used when you move items into your production order. When you run a production pick, the system creates movements or picks that add the items to the production order from this bin.
  • From-production bin code: the bin where the item is placed when you post output from your production order. This is also where you move the finished item away from the production order.

In a simple scenario you can use the same bin for all three. But if you have a production line with different bins at the beginning and the end, you would set the to-bin code where the item is actually picked and the from-bin code at the end where the item is outputted.

Overruling bin setup on work centers and machine centers

The location card gives you the default behaviour, but you can take it further. You can use a more detailed setup on the work center or machine center card to overrule the location setup.

For example, if you have an output work center at the end of your production line, you can assign that bin code as the from-bin. The from-bin is where you take the item from the production area and put it back into inventory. This gives you control over exactly where finished items land, matching the physical layout of your production line.

Q&A

Which bins do you need to set up to use warehouse management with production orders?

You need to set up three bins on the location card: the open shop floor bin, the to-production bin, and the from-production bin. The open shop floor bin handles internal production order handling, the to-production bin is used when items are picked into the production order, and the from-production bin is where items are placed when you post output.

Can you use the same bin for all three production bin codes?

Yes. In a simple scenario you can assign the same bin to the open shop floor, to-production, and from-production bin codes. If your production line uses different bins at the start and the end, you should set the to-bin where the item is picked and the from-bin where the item is outputted.

Can you override the default bin setup from the location card?

Yes. You can use a detailed setup on the work center or machine center card to overrule the location-level bin setup. For example, you can assign a specific from-bin to an output work center at the end of your production line so finished items move back into inventory from the correct location.

What is the from-production bin used for?

The from-production bin is where the item is placed when you post output from a production order. It is the bin from which you move the finished item out of the production area and back into inventory.
