What is the purpose of a warehouse pick?

The warehouse pick is a document meant to create a movement from the inventory from the pick bins into the shipping bin. So, the point of creating a warehouse pick from a warehouse shipment is to create a document with lines saying take the item from whatever bin code and place it on the shipment bin code.

This is what happens in the video

The warehouse pick is the document you use to move inventory from the pick bins into the shipping bin in Business Central. You create it from a warehouse shipment, and it generates lines that tell the warehouse employee which bin to take items from and which bin to place them in. The take action uses the inventory bin code, and the place action uses the shipping bin code.

You can change the bin code on a line if you pick from a different bin than the one suggested. You enter the quantity to handle on each line, and you can split a line if you take part of the quantity from one bin and the rest from another. The quantity to handle is not filled in automatically unless you run the Autofill Quantity to Handle function. When the picking is complete, you register the pick, which creates warehouse entries and moves the items into the shipment bin.

What a warehouse pick does in Business Central

The warehouse pick is a document meant to create a movement of inventory from the pick bins into the shipping bin. You create it from a warehouse shipment, and the result is a document with lines that tell the warehouse what to move and where.

Each line has a take action and a place action. The place action bin is normally the same for all lines, which is the shipping bin. The take action bin code is whatever bin you pick from in the inventory. So if you have a line for bin code 52.06 with three pieces, the warehouse employee goes to bin 52.06, collects three pieces, enters the quantity to handle, and continues to the next line.

Changing bin codes during picking

You can change the bin code while you work. This applies whether you pick directly in Business Central, use a scanner device, or work from a printed pick document.

If you print the pick, the warehouse employee notes the actual bin and quantity on paper while walking around the warehouse. If they take items from a different bin than the one on the document, they write down the new bin code and the quantity. When they return to Business Central, you change the bin code on the line to match what actually happened.

Entering and splitting the quantity to handle

On the pick line, you enter the quantity to handle directly. If the employee only takes part of the quantity from a bin, for example two pieces from the first bin, you can split the line. You handle the first quantity on the first line, then select the bin code manually for the second line to cover the rest.

You need to fill in the quantity to handle on all the shipment lines. It is not filled in automatically. From the start, you can run the Autofill Quantity to Handle function, which fills in the default quantity to handle on all lines and saves you from entering each one manually.

Registering the pick

Once the pick is done, the warehouse employee returns to Business Central with the paper and enters all the quantities to handle. You then register the pick from the process menu using Register Pick. This creates the warehouse entries that move the items into the shipment bin.
