This is what happens in the video

You can post production output directly on a production order without using an inventory put-away, but only when you run a simple location that does not require shipments or receipts. When you post the output through the production journal, Business Central creates the item ledger entries and the warehouse entries automatically. The output lands in the default bin for production, and you handle any further movement with an internal movement or a movement journal afterwards.

This applies when you combine production order functionality with warehouse functionality on a basic location setup. If your location requires inventory put-aways, the flow is different. On a simple location you skip the put-away step entirely because the output is already posted to inventory.

Posting output directly on the production order

When you work with production orders and warehouse functionality together on a simple location, you don’t need an inventory put-away to register the output. You can post the output straight from the production journal on the production order.

Before you post, the production order has no output. If you check the item ledger entries at this point, there are no output entries. You open the production journal directly from the production order and enter the output quantity, along with the quantities on any other lines you want to post. You don’t have to post everything on every line. You might skip the consumption of two items, for example, and only post capacities and times.

What Business Central creates when you post the journal

When you post the production journal with the output, Business Central creates the item ledger entries directly. If you post an output quantity of 3, you get an output line with a quantity of 3 in the item ledger entries.

At the same time, the system creates the corresponding warehouse entries. You get a warehouse entry with a positive adjustment on the default bin code for production. That bin comes from the work center or from the location setup, depending on how your configuration is built.

Moving the finished goods afterwards

Because the output is already posted to inventory, you don’t use an inventory put-away to move it. The quantity is on the default production bin and counted as inventory. If you need to move it somewhere else, you create an internal movement or move it directly in a movement journal.

Q&A

Can you post production output without an inventory put-away?

Yes, but only on a simple location that does not require shipments or receipts. You post the output directly from the production journal on the production order, and Business Central creates the item ledger entries and warehouse entries automatically.

Where does the output end up when you post it directly?

The output lands on the default bin for production. This bin comes from the work center setup or from the location setup.

How do you move the finished goods after posting the output?

Since the output is already posted to inventory, you don’t use an inventory put-away. You create an internal movement or move the quantity directly in a movement journal.

Does Business Central create warehouse entries when you post the production journal?

Yes. Posting the journal creates a warehouse entry with a positive adjustment on the default production bin code, alongside the item ledger entries.
