This is what happens in the video

This article explains the simplest outbound warehouse flow in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central when your location is set up to use bins only. In this setup you have no picking documents and no shipping documents.

You handle the entire outbound process directly from the sales order. You can enter or look up the bin code on the sales order line, print the built-in picking list, and let the warehouse employee pick by hand.

You then update the sales order lines manually with the picked quantities and any changed bin codes before you post.

When you post the sales order, Business Central creates a posted sales shipment and generates both item ledger entries and warehouse entries in one go.

Bin-only warehouse setup in Business Central

When a location is set up to use bins only, you do not have any picking documents or shipping documents involved in the outbound process. That keeps the flow short and lets you manage everything from the sales order itself.

This is the most simple warehouse flow you can have while still using bins.

Starting from the sales order

The process starts with a sales order. You do not need to release the sales order. It is possible to release it, but it is not necessary for this flow.

From the sales order you can print a picking list. There is a picking list attached directly to the sales order, and it is simply a piece of paper that the warehouse employee can use to perform the pick based on the information on the order.

You can enter the bin code directly on the sales order line. You can also look up the bin code to find the correct one before you print the picking list.

Picking and updating the sales order

The warehouse employee performs the pick and can note by hand the quantities picked. After that, you update the sales order lines manually with the correct quantities, or with other bin codes if the employee took the item from a different bin than the one on the line.

Posting the sales order

Finally, you post the sales order and send the goods to the customer. Posting creates a posted sales shipment. It also creates both item ledger entries and warehouse entries in one go.

When everything is done, you still have the sales order for invoicing against the posted sales shipment.

Q&A

Do you need to release the sales order in a bin-only warehouse flow?

No. Releasing the sales order is possible but not necessary in this flow. You can run the entire outbound process directly from the sales order.

How do you handle bin codes without picking documents?

You enter the bin code directly on the sales order line, and you can look up the correct bin code before printing the picking list. If the employee picks from a different bin, you update the sales order line manually with the new bin code.

What does Business Central create when you post the sales order in this setup?

Posting creates a posted sales shipment and generates both item ledger entries and warehouse entries in one go. The sales order remains available for invoicing against the posted shipment.

What picking document do you use in a bin-only location?

You use the picking list attached to the sales order. It is a piece of paper that the warehouse employee uses to pick based on the information on the sales order, since there are no separate picking documents in this flow.
