This is what happens in the video
If you run production orders in Business Central on a location that requires warehouse pick, you cannot post consumption until you have created and registered the warehouse pick first. The system blocks the production journal because the picked quantity is 0. Once you register the pick, the consumed quantity defaults into the production journal and you can post.
For production orders you do not create a shipment first. You create the warehouse pick directly from the production order, unlike the normal warehouse flow where the pick comes from a shipment.
The warehouse pick is only created for the components that have available inventory. If you have two components on the list and only one is available, the pick is created for that one item.
The warehouse pick moves the components from the pick bin to the production bin defined on the location card or on the last work center in the routing.
When a warehouse pick is required for production orders
A warehouse pick becomes mandatory for production when you set up the location in one of two ways:
- You check the Require Shipment field on the location card.
- You check Directed Put-away and Pick, which also enables Require Shipment automatically.
With either setting active, you have to perform a warehouse pick to pick the components for the production order before you can consume them.
Creating the warehouse pick directly from the production order
In a standard warehouse flow you first create a shipment, and from that shipment you create the warehouse pick. Production orders work differently. You do not create a shipment. Instead you create the warehouse pick directly from the production order menu.
In this example the production order is for item Back Hub on location Main, which requires warehouse pick. After refreshing the production order, the system creates the component lines and routing lines on that location. From the menu you then select Create Warehouse Pick, and it creates the pick activity.
Why consumption cannot be posted before the pick is registered
If you go into the production journal and try to enter a quantity before handling the pick, or before even creating it, posting fails. The journal reports that the pick quantity is 0, so you cannot post any consumption.
This is the system enforcing the rule: you must create and register the warehouse pick before you post the consumption.
Picks are only created for available components
When you look at the warehouse pick that was created, you can send it to the warehouse employee to pick. In this scenario only one of the two components on the list has available inventory, so the warehouse pick is only created for that one item number.
The pick instructs you to move the quantity from the pick bin to the production bin. The production bin is the one stated on the location card or on the last work center in the routing.
Registering the pick and posting consumption
To complete the pick, fill in the quantity to handle or use auto-fill, then register the pick. Once registered, go back to the production order and open the production journal. Now it is possible to post the quantity for the item, and the journal defaults in the consumed quantity that you picked.
If you delete the lines for the components that were not picked, you can post the consumption journal that was created from your warehouse pick. The components are picked automatically into the production bin defined on the location or the work center card.
Q&A
When is a warehouse pick required for a production order in Business Central?
A warehouse pick is required when the location has the Require Shipment field checked, or when Directed Put-away and Pick is enabled, since that also enables Require Shipment.
Do you create a shipment before the warehouse pick on a production order?
No. For production orders you create the warehouse pick directly from the production order menu. You do not create a shipment first, unlike the normal sales warehouse flow.
Why does posting consumption fail with a pick quantity of 0?
The system requires you to create and register the warehouse pick before posting consumption. If you have not registered the pick, the pick quantity is 0 and consumption cannot be posted.
What happens if a component has no available inventory?
The warehouse pick is only created for components that have available inventory. If one of two components is unavailable, the pick is created only for the available item number.
Where are the components picked to?
Components are picked from the pick bin into the production bin. The production bin is defined on the location card or on the last work center in the routing.
